P. Somniferum seedling ?

Can you confirm the I.D ? To me it looks like P. Somniferum.
I don't get it with these plants. I sowed a ton of seeds in the ground this spring and had zero germination. People say "just toss the seeds and it will grow alone"... Just no. It does not work. I got them to gemrinate in pots but not in the ground. People also say it has to be cold to get them to germinate and... Just no. I germinated them indoors in pots at 25-30°C.
And will this little guy be growing to maturity ? It is shaded by my morning glories... And about them MGs : They are now several meters long vines. It's like a jungle in my flower bed and they're still not flowering... It's disappointing as it's the full flowering season.

Morning glories might prefer full Sun to flower, and poppies, which that might be a seedling, well anything with tiny seeds can be a little tricky sometimes, you usually have to hit within the parameters pretty good

I feel you. Ive gotten indoor poppies to cabbage, but they stalled. Outdoors nothing ever comes up. Im going to try again sowing my seed in November this time.

Also, Denman told me that when you sow them you have to make sure the soil does not dry out at all until they sprout. I believe that is what happened to mine. I didn't get a single germination direct sowing this year..
-------------------- One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' was his response. 'I don't know', Alice answered. 'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

That looks about right... A little too early to say for sure, but looks good so far. Hey I def feel ya on the "they're so easy to grow it's stupid" bit lol. For some, in the right climate they grow like weeds, but thats the key, climate. Sometimes they can be downright picky little bastards. 2 key things needed for good germination are sun and water. If you have too much or too little of either at the wrong time you'll have a rough go of it. Once you get the basics down though, it will be much easier. I also disagree about leaving them uncovered. I always cover mine outdoors with a fine layer of sterile peat. If I don't have it for some reason then a fine layer of dirt. Very fine, but still just enough to cover. That's just me though, and what works.
But to answer your Q about flowering, idk if it will make it or not. Poppies will germinate at 100F, but will grow about 3 inches tall with a pod the size of a match head. If you can transplant or move the pot outside you'll have better luck, but it may be late in the season. (Or too early depending on which hemi you're in)
Your Morning Glories- have u been feeding them a high nitrogen diet by chance? I've seen this happen with too much nitrogen, plants foliage will flourish but will not flower. My only thought at the moment. Best of luck to you, and dont give up. It'll be that much sweeter when u get your first good grow.
Best, Den

The little poppy is in the flower bed, under the MGs, in the shade.
And yeah, I put a lot of compost, used tea bags and "blood and bone" in that flower bed. Any chance to have these Mgs flowering one day ?

Wow, that's alot of nitrogen... I suppose there's a chance, just don't feed it any more N, adding Phosphorus may help, but I'm no MG expert. The prob with excess N is the relationship between it and flowering. In a plants natural environment, as it consumes the food around it, Nitrogen levels begin to naturally deplete. It's this depletion of N that triggers initial flowering. To be more specific, the ratio of N to P. lowering N and Rising Phosphorous will induce flowering, as the plant naturally reads this as a sign of foliage nutrients running low, and imminent death. Since a plants sole purpose in life is to reproduce, they flower in effort to produce seed for the next generation.
I had cosmos last year that my sisters dog kept urinating in the bed. (Gross I know)... Male dog urine is full of nitrogen... It killed whatever was directly sprayed, but the plants around it grew ridiculously huge, with foliage so thick and mutated I was amazed. Eventually, when she took her dog back and levels lowered, it did flower. At over 6 feet tall, and looking like MJ lol. lmao A few massive bush like plants, unlike any Cosmo I've ever seen. So, don't give up hope yet.
As to the poppy you seeded- did you use similar soil/ grow medium in that outdoor bed as well? This could be part of the problem with germination, and would almost certainly kill them anyway. A small amount of manure properly tilled in is good food, but when it's left in clumps or overdone it stays too wet and can cause rot, as well as other probs.
It's all a learning experience, don't stress too much. Gardening should be fun, even if we fail (or just falter a little) - And FAIL I have many times over But learning isn't failing, it's all part of the fun, part of the process. Don't give up on the MG, and next year sow your poppies in a simple veggie style soil. A little manure, some compost if needed, but easily draining so it won't pool up water or stay wet for days. Try mixing seeds around in the soil, just under the surface, and keep it moist until they sprout.
Good seed quality can be an issue too, so make sure you're getting from a good source. Best of luck With your MG, and give those poppies another go next year. Just remember to have some fun too
Den
OP - post a question regarding MG's and excess nitrogen in the forum. I know there are many who are better suited to help you than me. Best to you
