Liberty Cap? Id Help Please!
    #21999963 - 07/26/15 01:18 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I am having a hard time identifying whether these are liberty caps or not. Any help would be appreciated!
It is relatively early to be finding them here, but we have had a couple of nights that have been very cold and I haven't seen these around before today.

Habitat:
New Brunswick, Canada (east)

Gills:
light-medium gray

Stem:
3-8cm

Cap:
conical, 1-3cm

Spore print color:
waiting on it

Most of them look like Panaeolus papilionaceus. One of them in the first picture may be a Conocybe.

I think I found some of them a few weeks ago, growing out of dung. They were identified for me as the same species elprawn has given you above, aka the Petticoat Mottlegill. I have since seen them and found them easier to identify in the field from the little petticoat frills they have at the bottom of the cap.

I thought they were liberty caps when I found them too

They go a kind of bronze colour when they sry out.

A good tip for identifying these as not libs is that the stem is very different on these, the stem is a darker colour, and also has a different feel to lib caps.

Notice how with lib caps they are less straight and kind of striated in pattern
