Like a reishi but probably not a reishi

I was out on my beloved Honda PCX 150 this morning, flying down a residnetial streetin Rockford Il, when in passing I noticed something sticking out of the side of a tree. I turned around, headed back and checked it out. Happily I had my phone with me and took this photo:

The tree it was growing on is deciduous. It is in no way fir-like. I don't know whether the wood is hard or soft. I did not touch it or get down and smell it--this tree is on private property. So that is the best I can do.
What might it be?

Either a Ganoderma in the G.applanatum clade, or Fomes fomentarius. Difficult to tell from these photos and this particular specimen.

Thanks. Is ganoderma applanatum a medicinal fungus? I have seen it listed in the ingredient box on certain products put out by health food companies with Reishi or Red Reishi playing the title role on the label. Of the two you mention, this one seems to look most like what I saw--I checked both your candidates on image-filtered Goole search. It didn't look at all like most of the photos of Fomes Fomentarius.

Fomes fomentarius can be a bit of a trickster. This actually turned out to be F.fomentarius instead of G.applanatum.
It does not always have that nice hoof shape.
That being said this is most likely a Ganoderma in the G.applanatum clade.

I have not come across that word "clade" before. Thanks for introducing me to that concept.
Well I have found a ganoderma at least, if not one of the lucidum variety. Getting closer. I will end up having to grow my own. So be it.
