Astral Projection

I'm totally confused on this subject.... I have gotten out of body before during sleep paralysis but people seem to think that actually getting out of body and exploring the astral as a ghost like form is different from actually astrally projecting.
Is astral projection just imagination then? Because I can't seem to do this while meditating.
I've focused on my third eye and experienced some colors or things fading into nothingness but I'm not free to explore from my body, this is more like remote viewing which in my opinion is entirely unreliable since it's a process that's still going on inside of your pain body.
I'm looking to get out of my pain body during meditation but everything I've read and watched seems like everyone's generally idea of a/p is solely based on an illusory imaginative experience from a 3rd person perspective.
I've tried to force myself out during meditation and it feels like there is separation going on but I'm feeling painful resistance in my neck. Also as I'm "getting out" the sensations of getting out that I'm feeling are completely false because my body is actually sitting up. I've been doing extensive work with my chakras and I can safely say that they have balanced out and these are not the problem.
I guess I don't know what I'm doing wrong because I've experienced this before and the method of putting oneself into sleep paralysis isn't reliable. I've researched this topic extensively and it seems like most people don't know what their talking about because they are saying a/p is from a 3rd person illusory experience. I know it's not...
I guess my question on the topic is what exactly am I doing wrong and how can I do this with meditation?

The prerequisite of getting "out of body" is a very relaxed/asleep body. The trance state, which is your 'mind awake body asleep'. Not easy for most people during sitting meditation, much easier to do when laying in bed/between sleep cycles.
From what I've came to conclude, don't get too hung up on the labels; I think lucid dreaming/obe/astral projection/remote viewing are all sides of the same coin - what we experience is largely influenced by our beliefs and preconceptions. i.e. if you think you are your body you will have an experience of coming out of your body, but this is not necessary. The author Robert Monroe eventually got to the point where he would simply "phase" to different realities.

I wrote this article a few years ago; it might shed some more light on what I've came to conclude thus far: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14074907
I'd highly recommend the book Multidimensional Man by Jurgen Ziewe.

I appreciate the feedback and I really enjoyed the article. I guess it's just going to take fine tuning on my part. I get to the "vibrational stage" all the time during my meditations. I guess I'll find out in time.
