It really doesn't matter where it is.

Left, right, up, down, and center are illusions of the mind.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Revelation 3:11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

You brought it on yourself Asante. You've been here long enough that you oughta have known better.

As to the OP... I love this country. America has it's ills, as all countries do, but overall it's a great place to be. It's so big...so many different landscapes, from the ocean to lakes, to mountains, plains, deserts, etc.... So much to explore. So much diversity, so many awesome people. Our government is filled with douchebags, but we the people rock.

I agree completely.

Except our government isn't just filled with douchebags... the top levels are filled with genocidal psychopaths who would prefer to dominate all life on Earth rather than co-exist peacefully with other human beings, as equals.

And to be fair, most, if not all governments are filled with power & money hungry, corrupt douchebags. People love to single out the United States because it's trendy -- the top dog will always receive the most scrutiny and will be dissected under a microscope. I highly believe the hierarchical power structures are what create these problems in government and corporations.
It leads to dehumanization and lack of caring.

The governments are not made from theys but Is. Rights are not handed out either. It doesn't mean there needs to be violence because authority is an illusion. The people "under" authority create it by agreeing it is a real thing in the first place.
We the people are the ones who pick our government and consume lots of material goods with complete apathy as to where the products are produced or how.
It's not just the US though it's almost all affluent countries.

Quote:

Despite the importance of avoiding bias in decision-making processes, research suggests that groups often select for their leaders individuals who are more biased in their decision-making style than the average person.
That is, even though the average person exhibits a range of biases in their judgments (Bazerman & Moore, 2009), studies show that groups often systematically select as leaders individuals who are particularly biased.
For example, in a series of studies we recently found that individuals whowere overconfident in their abilities were more likelytoattain higher rank in jointtasksthan individualswith accurate perceptions of their abilities (Anderson& Brion, 2010).
Similarly, groups are more likely to give higher rank to narcissistic individuals (Brunell et al., 2008), who tend to be overconfident (Campbell, Goodie, & Foster, 2004). Along related lines, research has shown that individuals are given more influence, prominence, and status when they are dogmatic and unwavering in their views, evenwhenthoseviewsareobjectivelyincorrect(Moscovici,Lage, &Naffrechoux, 1969;Staw&Ross,1980;Tetlock, 2006).

Groups also often systematically place individuals who are more risk-prone in higher positions of authority. The needforpowerisaconsistent predictor oftheattainmentofhigherrank (McClelland &Boyatzis,1982;Winter,1988), yet those higher in the need for power tend to take risks more than others, such as gambling, physical risks, drinking, drug use, and risky sex (Winter & Stewart, 1983).
Finally, recent work suggests that even the process of deliberation itself makes individuals look less powerful (Magee, 2009). Individuals who act with less consideration of possible alternatives are viewed as more influential.
To make matters worse, research suggeststhat groups frequently tend to choose individualsas leaders whose biases become worse when put into high-ranking positions. We have found that individuals high in trait-level dominance let power ‘‘go to their head’’ more than others (Anderson & Berdahl, 2002).
Their sense of power increases dramatically when they are placed into a high-power position, yet for individuals lower in trait-level dominance, their sense of power does not change much at all when given power. In turn, the sense of power leads to an increased propensity to takerisks(Anderson&Galinsky,2006),toperceiveinformationinamorebiased,overlypositivefashion(Anderson& Berdahl, 2002).

Yet, dominant individuals consistently attain higher-ranking positions than less dominant individuals (for a review, see Lord, De Vader, & Alliger, 1986). These findings suggest that the effects of hierarchy steepness are likely moderated by whether the group selects leaders who use unbiased decision-making processes. For example, more hierarchical groups should function more poorly when individuals who use particularly biased decision-making processes are in charge. In steeper hierarchies, those in charge have particularly strong control over group decisions, and their biases go unchecked by others around them.

This paper makes the case for an absence of sex differences in work behavior, arguing instead that work attitudes and work behavior are a function of location in organizational structures. The structures of opportunity (e. g., mobility prospects) and power (e. g., influence upward), along with the proportional representation of a person's social type, define and shape the ways that organization members respond to their jobs and to each other.
Quote:

In hierarchical systems like large corporations, the relative disadvantage of many women with respect to opportunity and power results in behaviors and attitudes (such as limited aspirations, concern with co-worker friendships, or controlling leadership styles) that are also true of men in similarly disadvantaged positions. The structure of power in organizations, rather than inherent sexual attitudes, can also explain why women sometimes appear to be less preferred as leaders. It is concluded that it is not the nature of women but hierarchical arrangements that must be changed if we are to promote equity in the workplace.

This why your government is so successful. They can bomb and kill people the world over and when the world informs you about their displeasure you respond with a jingoistic "they just hate our freedom". The fact is the rest of the world is just better informed about what the US government is doing than it's citizens are. You guys actually honestly believe you are the good guys and not the evil empire.

You are also shaped by the cultural values of your country, to ignore that where you are from plays no part in who you become and how you act is obviously incorrect.

Pride also does not necessarily mean that you place yourself above others or ignore the inevitable flaws of what you're prideful of - and in that vein, blind nationalism is terrible, and yes you come across a decent chunk of americans who are totally oblivious or unwilling to see that there are some very real problems with this country and that our government has harmed a lot of innocent people many blind pursuits of so-called justice. But nationalism or pride does not necessarily need to be blind, and I find that more and more people, particularly younger generations, have a very frank view on our flaws culturally and as a nation. I think that pride and nationalism also include the desire to better things, improve, and innovate, and to do this, you have to address the ugly side of things. I'd say that the vast majority of Americans are very unhappy with a great deal of things about this country and how it's run, given the approval ratings for congress.

Are we doing enough to change it? Debateable. This is a large complex country, 300 million people who have to get on board and decide to take action. Societal change comes slowly and will not happen(at least not anything radical) with the next president, or the next 5 presidents -  and it starts with self-awareness, we are somewhat between a rock and hard place with this ridiculous two party system and a government that is split down the middle and downright childish about cooperating. But what outsiders, and many insiders who aren't paying attention is that attitudes are shifting all across the board, and we are on the right path, but it'll be a long one.

Good luck up there in Canada with a China, Russia, or a Middle Eastern country ruling the world.

I'm not saying US foreign policy is perfect at all, but it's better than the other alternatives.

and even though I find myself facepalming and cringing at the sideshow we call our government(I've got my popcorn ready for the primaries) and my fellow countrymen, ultimately, I'm glad to be from here and I think it's beautiful that being American is not dependent on where you were born or from, or how long or short you've been here.

Goddamnit, once I get a few drinks in my I am all for a good old patriotic circle jerk, patriotism is definitely proportionate to amount of alcohol consumed.

at least you're a citizen of one of the most important empires to exist in humanity's history as of yet. that's at least how i look at it. i might be someone who a future historian may look back and think "i would like to be that guy, at least for a few days, just to see what it's like,". i'm no one of importance by any stretch. but if i were to go back and live in rome, i would be much more interested to see what it would be like to be an ordinary citizen than augustus. i mean, we kind of have a general idea as to what that was like anyway. and besides, roman politics was brutal.

i don't see much use in nationalism anyway. at the end of the day we're all just part of a larger group who are ruled by a smaller group with their own agenda, completely independent of our needs, wants and desires. we all have to look out for each other, especially when it comes to them getting over on us. robert heinlein was right when he advised us to love our country, but never trust our government.
