Papayas Fish,and Psychoactive Toads,Oh My!
    #21994530 - 07/25/15 10:13 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hey my fellow garden brethren, how goes it?
Sorry I haven't been around in a while, but this move to Florida broke me,and I still haven't found a job yet,so no internet access.

Anyway, life is really good here, and I thought I'd show you guys a few of my plants and things:cool:

First of all,you guys remember all my mishaps with my beloved Lophophora alberto-vojtechii?
Well, after loosing the main head, and his pup,I had to rely on it's roots, and I even had a slug eat the middle out of it!
Well,it still survived, and has four new pups protruding:excited:
There are a couple of babies I started from seed in the pic too.

Various Trichs, and a dragon fruit seedling.

This one is for ferrel, and I repoted it since this pic was taken.

My Papaya the previous renter left!

Various.

A Psychoactive Toad:busytripping:

A few smaller fish I caught, and I've since caught some monsters!

Hope you guys enjoyed, and I'll post more pics from the sunshine state in the near future!

Yes man,I'll make it:thumbup:
Oh,and this isn't even half of my plants!!!

I also never intended on doing anything with that toad but admiring it's beauty.
I don't consume psychoactive substances anyway,and I haven't in over a decade.
I just thought you guys would like to actually see one, that's all:cool:

I also have been catching huge Alligator Gar,
Bowfin,Shellcracker,and Bass,but it's always when I don't have the camera.
I promise some monster catches next time I go:thumbup:

As for the citrus goes,I have not seen a single tree around here yet:mad2:

You are lucky to be in such a tropical place and my moringa is falling over with pods. I will probably send out seed in some weeks time.

Even so, isn't maritimus still psychoactive (or produce psychoactive toxin, I should say)?

Quote:

There are two American toads which produce the toxin in quantity: Bufo maritimus, the cane toad, and Bufo alvarius, the Colorado River toad.

Yes, I read that. But the rest of the paragraph reads "The only other problem is that it’s supposedly nearly impossible to get high from orally ingesting bufotenin (while it’s very possible to kill yourself). The only proven psychoactive agent in toads is 5-MeO-DMT, a tryptamine compound only produced in the skin of Bufo alvarius."

So, yes, it is psychoactive. But...
Mind you, it's a pity. If it was otherwise, our aussie friends probably wouldn't have a problem with the introduced cane toad...

hmm..its actually produced in the skin? I learned poison dart frogs are only poisonous due to compounds they ingest in a certain species of insect they eat. I assumed the trip toads were similar.

Yes, apparently it's an actual secretion of the paratoid glands (or skin, it's not too clear) of Bufo alvarius. Poison dart frog's poison runs in the food chain and kind of "oozes" from their skin: the frogs loose it in captivity.

I'm pretty sure the toads have a gland located kinda right behind their 'ear' (or where their ears would be).

Yea you pick them up and lay them over a piece of glass and squeeze the glands. It will shoot a beige goo on the plate and you let it dry. Then you have powdered 5-meo-dmt after you scrape it off.

HAHA!

I'm back with some more pics!

I caught two more cane toads outside my door the other day!

A male and a huge female!

I also have been finding a ton of gopher Tortoises despite the fact that they are endangered.

And for a few cacti.

This Cereus was Cereously Huge, nearly 12 or more feet tall!!!

Wild mother of a thousand, and they grow everywhere here!

and some wild citrus growing out in the middle of a swamp!

And I know I keep promising big fish, but the weather here has been awful, and it's rained and flooded every day for the past three weeks,so the fishing is suffering.
However this is a a big colorful bluegill I did manage to catch!

Oh how I love grow zone 9B:biggrin:

I have more pics, but I have to go,as my buddy is ready to go,and we finished our meal nearly 20 minutes ago:lol:

PEACE

I caught a pretty big bowfin yesterday, but this picture doesn't show this fish justice!
I'm estimating it weighed a few pounds, and I fought with it for nearly 15 minutes!

I also hooked one double it's size and battled it for a long time until my light weight line finally gave:mad2:

Nice. I caught my first bowfin this summer myself. I had no idea what a bowfin was when I caught it until I looked it up after I caught it. The worst part was I didn't realize it had teeth until I stuck my thumb in it's mouth to lift it out of the water and it clamped down on me. Ouch.

Yeah man,I am indeed,and no,I didn't eat the bowfin,they aren't edible unless you know how to properly clean them,and I don't.

There are so many non native fish here it would be impossible to get rid of them all,and I'm not sure if you're supposed to dispose of them,or not.

I wouldn't kill them regardless,because they are so cool:cool:
I'm going to start up an aquarium!

Lol, I didn't know that. I brought mine home and prepped and fried it. It wasn't bad, the texture just wasn't like any other fish I had ever eaten. Flavor was mild. All in all, wasn't bad.

I was out fishing early this morning, and I thought I'd show you a forest of wild Loquat trees of all sizes.
I should try to dig up and sell some of these!

And this vine had massive leaves!
I've see these at garden centers and everywhere else but I'm not sure what they are.
I'm thinking Philodendron,but I;m not sure.
What do you guys think?

Got some updates on a  few of my plants!

I started four mango's from seed,and all germinated:excited:
I only pictured two because the others are firmly rooted, but haven't pushed out any vertical growth yet like these two.

And my ferrel moringa:biggrin:
It probably needs yet another transplant and some water!

Now I know this Pomegranate tree is totally rootbound,as it's been in this same pot since the last time I was living in Florida!
It needs to be in the ground, but I have nowhere I can put it in the ground at:sad:

And my papaya plant!
This thing needs to hurry up and get me some ripe fruits,I'm getting anxious:yesnod:

And some various trichs I grew from seed, with a dragon fruit in the middle growing nicely.

Alberto and his little williamsii buddies getting a tad bit too much sun:sunny:

Bigger Trichs.

And my bigger dragon fruit from outer space, man:wink:

Ml little key lime seedlings that I thought were toast back when the ammonia leak almost killed them in KY.

Last but no least a mimosa hostillis plant.

Well, all I do is take the whole seed out,and let it dry for a few days.
They are in a sheath, and it's impossible to get them out without letting it dry first.

Then, after I let that dry for a few a days,I crack it open, and retrieve the seed, from which I let soak in water for a few days before I plant it in moist soil, and that's it!

It doesn't take too long either, and all four seeds I did,all germinated.
I can't wait to try my hand at some other tropical fruits:yesnod:

Holy Shit Dude!!!

I have no clue how I missed this. You have some VERY nice specimens there Lil Homie:wink:

How old it that Mimosa again? Also dude you better do something with that Pom tree. It seems to be in flower and I'm sure it would be more happy with more room to spread it's legs:naughty:

These last 2 pics really interest me though.

Thanks man,and that mimosa was started last fall,or early winter.
It would be bigger, but it got burnt up by the sun,and lost a lot of it's leaves, then it got too much fertilizer which really stunted it's growth, and slowed it down!
I finally got the hang of growing these picky plants now though, after much trial and error.

That Pomegranate tree has been in that pot for over a year, and desperately needs to go in the ground, but alas,I have no nowhere to put it:sad:

That Echinopsis has put out so many flowers this season, that I have lost count!
I will try and save you some pollen when that flower opens:thumbup:

That Aloe is a year old,and I've taken multiple plantlets from it's base in that length of time!

Do it,they are super easy to grow.
Which reminds me,I still have a bunch of seeds, but I fear they set too long, and aren't viable any more:facepalm:

Any details on em? Just pick em out of the fruit, dry em, and plant em?

Actually you just pick them out of the fruit, and plant them directly.
I let mine dry for a few days, and they still germinated, but they say to just plant them directly from the fruit.

I just went out to check on my pomegranate tree, and the very few blooms it's making, have all fallen off.
If I don't get this thing in the ground somewhere,I'll never see another pomegranate from it ever!
I can only imagine how bound up the roots are:sad:

My whole back of the apartment complex is a 15 acre lake, surrounded by a huge swamp with alligators!
That being said,i don't plan on living here infidelity, and I want to eventually move further inland to the country, and hopefully a house.

If I were to put it in the ground here,I would end up having to leave it.
Plus that bitch weighs too much to walk out there!
What would  people who see me think walking a big green plant out to a swamp:wink:

Oh shit I'm so stoned,I haven't laughed this much in years!
Not about this post,my previous two!
You know the weed is good when you laugh this much at something, and can not stop.
Ok,I'll no compose myself, and answer your question.
There really is no way in Florida I'd be seen lugging a big old plant out into the woods!

Everybody in the world, and their dog would see me,and just know that it's a marijuana plant:lol:
From a distance, any big old pot with a green plant, and a younger man carrying out in the woods, has got to be a cannabis plant.

The woods are limited here, and I have a small patch of woods, that's not private property on that lake front, the only possible place I could put it.
There are just too many people that fish out there, and bums,I would feel comfortable about the whole idea.

However,I did throw a few trichs in the ground out there, for shits and giggles:lol:

well,I was bored,so I thought I'd take a few pictures.

Here is my mimosa hostillis, that I recently took a cutting from,so it would bush out,and I can grow it bonsai style.
It's already pushing out side shoots!

My bonsai kalanchoe, going on four years old!

My bonsai Bolivian rainbow pepper going on two years.

My Bonsai Asian citrus of some sort.

My bonsai Texas ebony tree, going on 7 years! needs a reshaping,as do my other bonsai plants too.I'll do it tomorrow on my day off.

My mango trees are really growing fast!!!

This dragon fruit is also growing fast!

Some Holy basil I started two days ago.

A fully rooted papaya cutting I took.

A pomegranate cutting I took so long ago for a certain someone:wink:

And as you can see,I have a lot of plants with very little room.
I really will never be able to grow to my full potential until I get out of here!
I'm actually surprised all mt plants are doing as well as they are not getting full sun!

Thanks buddy, but I prefer fruits and veggies to tropical plants.
You should see my massive fruit and veggie seed collection!
I'm just not as fortunate as you to be able to live in a house with property so I can grow them out in a garden.

Same goes for cacti as well.
I'm not going to collect anymore, until I can move to a house so they can be put in the ground.
I just make due with what I have for now, until things get bet better:cool:

Nice. The stores around here still have veggies and herbs out for sale, but nothing really looks good, all rootbound and not cared for.

Holy crap, who knew I could catch Tilapia here!!!
I just think of all the countless dollars I've spent on these tasty little fish, and they are right outside my backdoor:facepalm:
These weren't very big,but were fat,and would have probably made some nice little fillets.

I also caught another non native Black Acara, and he put up a fight.
This one is the biggest, and prettiest I've caught so far too.

All three of these fish shouldn't have been let back into the wild,it's against the law,but since I wasn't going to eat them,I'm not killing them no matter the laws.

And a small Largemouth Bass:wink:

Sorry no pics of an monsters, but the fishing near my house is pretty difficult, because of the super abundance of food they have, and all the people that over fish the lake.
Maybe one day I'll get lucky though:smirk:

Lol, tilapia would have never been thrown back if I caught em.... I LOVE tilapia...

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

Oh,they are one of my favorite fish to eat,and have you seen how high the price has gotten on them at the supermarket!

Anyway,I don't bother keeping my catches,if I don't catch enough for a few meals.
Two fish just isn't worth my time.

Now that I know they are there,I'm going to get out early,on my next day off,and stay all day to see how many I can catch to eat.

However, they say they wont bite a hook,so I think I was just lucky, and will most likely never catch another one:lol:

Lol, that's how my luck usually is. What were you catching those with? Lure? Worm?

I hate when this happens. You haven't caught shit all night and then you catch one good size one and think if I don't catch anymore 1 isn't worth to keep. So for as good as it is, I always throw back.
