Can you pre-cook PF jars for later use?
    #21994028 - 07/25/15 08:13 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Rainy weekend here and stuck indoors for a couple of days so I need something to occupy my time.  I was thinking about making a lot of PF jars for later use.  Can I pressure cook them in the canning jars without holes punched in the lids, put them on the shelf for awhile until they are needed, and then when its time to inoculate, punch the holes with a sterile nail?

You risk a high vector of contamination if the nail isn't sterile. If you want to prep in advance I would put them in their final container. Imagine you go to poke holes with the nail and as you move it across the air it picks up a mold spore (Which you're probably breathing in right now) and you hammer that into a nice, fresh substrate.

Lets say there's mold on the hammer ('Cause my hammers aren't clean at all) and it falls somehow gets transferred to the nail you just pushed in because pushing in that nail will disturb the dry verm layer, your mycelium will not be happy with you.

Is it impossible? No. Do you want to risk it though?

I would wipe down the hammer with an alcohol wipe and flame sterilize the nail.

When you push that hammer in you're going to disturb the dry verm layer. This is the biggest defense against contamination in BRF.

You can do it if you want but you know why people say don't shake the jar or don't move it quickly or you'll disturb the dry verm layer? What you're doing will do just that.
