Man gets two years for selling drugs over Silk Road 2.0

July 24, 2015
Wales, England-
A drug dealer peddling cannabis and magic mushrooms on the “dark web” has been jailed for two years.
Cei William Owens was arrested with six other Britons last year by the National Crime Agency (NCA) as part of an international sting on Silk Road 2.0 – a shady internet site allowing users to sell drugs and guns online.
The 29-year-old later pleaded guilty to two charges of supplying or offering to supply Class A and B drugs as well as three counts of possession.
Swansea Crown Court heard Owens went under the online pseudonym of “Johnny Alpha” and carried out drug deals using the online digital currency Bitcoin as part of his “organised and sophisticated” mail order-style service.
As well as advertising “quality hash” he promised free and next day delivery – brazenly choosing to send illegal substances via first class registered post.
Following a raid at his home in north Wales last year detectives found drugs, digital scales, and encryption software on installed on his computer.
Despite a defence plea to hand out a suspended sentence Recorder Ian Murphy QC said he had no choice but to impose an immediate prison sentence on Owens.
He said: “The nature of your operation was both sophisticated and very well organised.
“Photographic exhibits show that a room in your house had been turned into a distribution centre and you had numerous customer feedback on your dark web profile.
“You even boasted that you would not sell anything that you would not take yourself.
“However you did not know and did not care who you were selling to – they may have been children or vulnerable people.”
Online black market Silk Road was launched in 2011 and led to more than $200m (£126m) of anonymous online drug sales using the digital currency bitcoin.
Earlier this year its creator, Ross Ulbricht, 31, was sentenced to life by a US judge for a raft of charges including distributing drugs through the internet, conspiring to commit computer hacking and money laundering.
After the FBI took down the site a second, called Silk Road 2.0, was launched.
That platform has also been shut down by authorities in the US.
Following a series of raids in the UK last year NCA bosses said criminals were mistaken if they thought the dark web provided a “safe and anonymous” way for them to peddle drugs.
Deputy director Roy McComb said: “It may take time and effort to investigate and build a criminal case but we are determined to identify and prosecute people caught dealing drugs and committing serious crime using the dark web.”

2 years isn't bad, I mean it could have been ALOT worse.
I don't know if this is a lot in the UK, but 2 years for selling/being caught with drugs in the US is pretty damn good, especially if you are moving a lot of product, and have evidence of doing so. I had an uncle get 6 years in jail for doing much less.

It never says what drugs he was selling other than "quality hash". While I agree that 2 years for mushrooms and weed is outrageous, and I'd hate to be in that situation, it's not anywhere near the amount that he could have been in.
While I agree it's bad, it could have been much worse. Especially if he lived in the states.

Oops, overlooked that part. I still say it could have been much, much worse. 2 years sucks, but it's better than what a lot of people are getting in the US.

It's a shame we live in a country where two years for weed and mushrooms seems like a good deal.

The government doesn't want us to be enlightened, they want to exploit us. And they can't do that if we all wake up to the bullshit. That's why psychedelics are so "dangerous."

The gov has no idea what they are talking about yup, weed and shrooms are very non harmful to most people
And it is people's own responsibility, not the drug dealer's
The whole patriot act is as unpatriotic as anything, it is not worth the piece of paper it was written on

I feel like the government needs to take a look at the Netherlands vs. United States crime rates. Maybe compare England too. I believe weed and magic truffles are legal there and I don't think they're nearly as violent as the US. This dude shouldn't get 2 years. Maybe probation but even then I think it's ridiculous.

I got caught selling heroin, acid, molly, amphetamine & suboxone to an undercover for months and got my house raided where they found many other drugs. They got me with over a brick of heroin & ~2,500 dosages of acid. I got no prison or jail time (besides before I got bailed out for $50,000), just drug court. The cops were even nice enough to leave a 10 strip in my safe & my shroom grow behind lol. It was my first offense ever though, never even gotten a ticket before. I'm from NJ, they dropped mandatory minimums in place of treatment options for non-violent offenders. DO NOT push it, I got lucky, I could of gotten life & at first they wanted to give me 8 years. Sorry to hear about your uncle.

It's all fine and dandy and no one bats an eyelash when parents stuff their kids face in making them clinically obese. But if there's even a remote possibility that some cannabis was sold to a child everyone is up in arms.

^^ Thanks. Taking it as a blessing. I'm ok with living sober. Time to turn my life around & stop being a dope fiend. I was shooting up like 5 times a day, I don't think I could've gotten sober without getting busted unfortunatly. I didnt even realise the harm I was causing.
I'm pretty sure a child wouldnt be able to figure out how to get drugs on the silk road. Its underground, you need bitcoins, a credit or debit card to get the bitcoins, & a special broswer to even access the site. Plus most kids would be too scared to mail drugs to their parents mail box.

In the UK, 2 years for dealing drugs is pretty harsh. Normally you wouldn't get prison time for a first offense. It seems like he was made an example of for selling on Silk Road.

You know Rand Paul stood for 11 hours filibustering the vote to extend the worst parts of the patriot act, right? The patriot act's most fascist subsections have expired, thanks mainly to Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul (it was a bi-partisan effort, which he undoubtedly lead).

Honestly this is exactly what I believe as well. Word for word I came to exactly the same conclusion when I started tripping again (after a year or two of not being able to). The enlightenment they can bring you is fucking astounding.
