Hi Everyone,
Just wanting to know if anyone can help me out, i have picked some subs for the first time and have fan dried them for 24 hours as advised by a friend.
I am wanting to know if these are ok to eat as some of them have shrunk and gone dark blue or in some cases black.
can someone advise if they are eatable (small and larger) and if the smaller ones are as strong as the larger ones.
Thanks in advance.

They look good to me. As long as they all dried out ok. The last pic kind of looks like the mushroom is wet but I'm sure it's probably just the lighting.

looks like mother nature has been dehydrating them especially for you DOUBLE.DEUCE
on a related note. I had a VERY successful picking adventure last week after the rains...
It all began with a regular spot I was monitoring, to my surprise, this usually BOUNTIFUL spot had been cleaned out; when just three days earlier a fellow hunter told me there were pins everywhere, alas, there were no pins. My hunting excitation had been deflated. Never fear shroomers, it was then that I decided instead to venture into new lands. Gathering myself I headed out. Amongst the forest it wasn't long before I heard squawking atop the tree's and spotted a birdwatchers wet dream, a flock of rare black cockatoos.

Little did I know, that these spirit birds were an omen from mushroomland. and so, mushrooms began to appear
I eventually stumbled across some rather large patches

The haul from the single patch pictured above

Just when I thought that I'd definitely been blessed with more than enough I found another patch TWO meters away from the above patch

head held high, spirit sailing severely, I returned to the notmushroomland

May the year be filled with expansion

Thanks

Artnotwar - Thank you, yes its just the lighting.
wakingflow - wow, thats a great pic of the birds.. looks like you scored real well with the shrooms.
Hey have you guys got any tips for picking - i am kind of struggling to find some good spots, they are all too common. Is there much time left in this season? Also i have only really been targeting bark areas (parks) near lakes and rivers, any tips on other areas - only because im a newbie ...
Thanks again.

Wow great finds!! I have a spot down Mornington way that looks extremely similar! And it had a flock of black cockatoos in a tree nearly identical to that! Freaky deaky!!

i went for a look at my usual spot today, found my last 4 batches there and didnt find much at all! it really seems to have finished up for me
i did find this patch of what i think are look alikes, they all have almost identical caps but the stems gave it away for me, they were almost a clear hollow type? everything was pretty waterlogged out there so im not too sure if this had anything to do with it, plus ive never found subs in big patches like this in the bush but i am fairley inexperienced!

was i right to assume these werent subs? there was no bruising on any that i seen :/

Those are all P. subaeruginosa. They likely didn't bruise because they're waterlogged. Collect all the ones that are in good condition and not eaten by slugs and snails. Report back if unsure.

there's time left, i found those last week. I think maybe only if you're not picking in the mountains. So suburbia and coastal forests. Just keep walking and walking you'll eventually find something. If you cover 20km + in a day you're nearly bound to find something (paths/tracks near valleys and near water sources, streams etc)

they'd been left overnight on a kitchen bench then dehydrated, so they weren't at all sticky going into the dehydrator

Yeah that ratio is about the same for me, and the urban/sub-urban patches didn't do much after first flush. Just failed pins and a couple of small patches... early flushes were really spontaneous, nicely potent/fresh.
Would spore-printing the psubs that have done well in the shitty weather really make a difference to the morphology of subs from those spores ? Or is it more that you want to preserve the spores of a big network with large caps ?
Which is more dominant?
Mixing/spreading heaps of spores from different areas last year was a shitty idea I believe.

I would think the patches that did fruit well would have had more to do with local climates and conditions rather than genetics.

Also correct me if I'm wrong as I'm just learning, but I believe I've read freshly germinated spores don't carry genetic traits of the parent fruit? In order to clone traits you would have to clone tissue from the fruit body.
I believe Spores germinated start a new strain separate from the parent.
