I wake up this morning to find that one of my 5 jars has green mold growing in the sub straight yet colonized. I'm so mad at myself. I let the room get too hot and there wasn't enough air flow to cool it down. I start to look at the others and 2 of my most promising jars look like they have a speck of green towards the top...Fuck...I know the rules. It should be tossed. I was thinking about opening it outside, cutting away at the small speck, and leave it by itself to see what happens. Idk I'm pretty crushed right now...any advice?

The contams are inside the actual substrate, not just the visible portion. I've seen a million tricks on how to avoid contaminations and/or fruit with a contamed substrate and they always end up lack luster. IMO, post pics (But I'm pretty sure you know what you're looking at by now) and if they're contamed, just toss.

This hobby really is at best frustrating in the beginning. I myself am stuck without any pins a week after birthing a few super aggressive colonizers. Anyway, pic's are very important here, try making them as good as you possibly can. Sending good vibes you'r way

OK so here are some pics of the emerald impostor.

I couldn't get a better picture for the life of me but know there is a small amount of green growth showing up in the sub straight. Not actually on the mycilym but near it. I'm going to chuck it.
This is what the other 2 look like.

Unless you really look carefully you cant see the smaller then a eraser head speck of green mold on the cake. I'm going to try and cut away at the mold and dunk em and grow them separately.

Yep, that's trich. I'd even say with how far down in the jar those spots are they were endospores, meaning you didn't sterilize it enough. Just my guess.

And for future reference, use the wide-mouth half pints, colonization will be a LOT quicker, as well as being easier to birth once 100%.

cutting the mold won't do anything. it's fibers have grown throughout the cake already. the whole cake is trash.

If you had used the 1/2 pint wide mouth you may have gotten a few cakes there.
I'd switch jars. Keep those though, you will need them for something else lol.

Alright folks. Allot went down today. First off this is a horrible time for this. I'm going to see the show The Book Of Mormon on Broadway tomorrow. I've been wanting to see it for years and now is finally time. There was allot of research I needed to do today but instead I fought the emerald enemy.
Cake #1, the cake showing the first signs of growth and the strongest jar is now being dunked. It's growth along with the rest were stalled for a few days due to my choice of jars. It was ready. I dunked it before it could get infected with mold spores from the others.
3 were on the chopping block. They are to be my zombie cake experiments.
M1 x M2 xx M3 xxx
Mold 1-3 with a x representing the amount of infection.
As you can see in the last post M1 x was half colonized and mostly heavily infected. I did all of this outside taking extreme care to not get the spores anywhere but the trash. I carved it out and tried to remove all of the infection. I changed gloves multiple times making sure I didn't spread it by hand. I was left with about half the jar. After cleaning I later took half the assumed clean cake reminiscence and broke it up in a Tupperware container, mixed it with organic potting soil I recently got for my seeds, and put it in a spawn bag with a heppa filter. The other half is whole sitting in a peanut butter jar with a gauze pad filter on the top and some soil at the bottom. The other 2 were similar in infection and one was barely at all. There bagged in water. I plan on fruiting them separately even though its probably pointless. I still have #1 dunked and one of my other cakes looks fine. I also used some of the healthy mycelium from #1 that crumbled off and put them in one of the jars with soil. It will probably be a small harvest... but a harvest none the less.

Idk because all infections were shown to be Right above the inoculation hole. Not very deep ether. I check them everyday and that mold on M1 became visible overnight.

Sorry bro. it really sucks, thats for sure! hopefully you will get at least enough for you and a friend or two off the remaining cake. I wouldn't have too much hope for the others you are experimenting with....

After 18 days jar #6 has finally starting to show signs of colonization!
Today I'm making my fruiting chamber and birthing some cakes. Its pretty exciting. Also one of the clean cakes left that I left in the jar grew quite a bit. The mycylum is touching the bottom of the jar! OK so that's 1 positively clean cake and 1 that will most likely follow suit. 2 cakes is still something.
I'll keep you folks posted on my experiments soon. So far there showing promise. Call me Dr. Frankenstein but I still have hope for those monsters.
btw
THE BOOK OF MORMON WAS FUCKING AMAZING!!!
I haven't laughed that much in a long time. Great show. The theater is really small as well. We were front right about 6 or 7 rows from the stage. During the standing ovation I was looking at the lead, he saw me and we exchanged a knowing nod and a smile. That had to be the coolest moment of the show for me. If your at all interested listen to this little number.

A Magical Journey: A New Hope [Re: Tarrnack]

OK people. This is a major grow update.
First off #1 has been dunked and rolled and guarded by Gandalpf in his own terrarium. I have high hopes for this one.

I noticed there was a chia pet mucus on the cake. It must have made a barrier to protect itself. That's so fascinating.
Jar #6 on the left FINALLY showing signs of growth after 18 days. Left jar is almost fully colonized.

Now on to the experements.
M1 and M2 sit in there own separate PC in there own section of the house. I may drill a few more holes. As you can see M1 looks mostly normal in size where as M2 is considerably smaller after the operation.

These next few are inspired by bodhisatta's "PF tek for cloning on the EZ" thread http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21997518
The Jar on the left is a mix of the fuzzy mycelium on the top of #1's verm layer mixed with excess bits that fell off during cleaning and organic potting soil. The jar on the right is half of the badly infected M3 in a mostly invetro setup. Just a little soil and verm. I used gause pads as heppa filters.

The next experement is the other half of M3 crumbled up and mixed with soil in a tupperware container encased in a spawn bag. I actually scavenged it from my pot growing side project, so a seed of Bubble-Gum ended up finding its way into the mix.

Last but not least I have a pot for pot mixed with random mycelium particles. Next to it is a inoculated bag of rye berries filled with Cambodian spores.

I really appreciate everyone's good vibes and support. These past few days have been a bit of a setback but I tried my best to make lemonade out of lemons. My fingers are crossed and I'm hoping for the best. As always I'll keep you fine folks posted.
