Hello my brethren and any sisters here we may have. I'm back. Here's a little back story.

As some of you may know I had been with out work for about 7 months. Well almost at the end of my unemployment benefits running out, the desperation of not finding a job really got to me. I got really depressed. Really out of balance in the head. Started drinking a lot and then started having marital problems. Well long story short, I finally found a job and it really fixed things with me. I still have problems in my marriage but I've stated in the past I've always had a crazy life, crazy wife.

Anywho, even in the shit storm of life I've managed to grow some things. The only true love of my life, horticulture. That and my beautiful children. Here are my plants in my tub.

It's a tub grow. They are inside because the rolly polies were all in the pots and destroyed, or ate, 2 of the novo sprouts. I Google it and they don't really eat that but if there are hungry enough they will eat roots. And my chocolates have done super well in the shade. They are actually growing. I thought I had struck out with these 2 plants, as I have grown them out several times to no avail. With me working away from home they all suffered because they need a lot of water and attention. But now I am here and loving every minute of it. Enjoy guys. I'll post more updates.

Tubs are probably better anyways, keeps up humidity some and protects the seedlings from gusts of wind.

Sorry to hear about the money/drinking/wife problems. Im in the same situation but smoking bud instead of drinking cause of my crohns disease acting up whenever i imbide the sweet nectar of mash

Thanks brother. I think it will be better for some time now.

And how about my plants? I can't believe I'm actually getting theobroma cacao to grow in my environment. They stay in the shade 24/7. Before I failed because of them getting afternoon sun
I mean afternoon sun for Petes sake. It boggles the mind. These guys hate the sun. I got my elm and oak tree to give them shade and my novos will appreciate it too.

I see success on the horizon. :datass:

Glad to have you back, ferrel. Plants are looking :super:.

I hope the Theobroma does okay there. I think with drip irrigation you might be able to hvae them in the ground.

I forgot if you already have on in the garden, but you should definitely plant a mango tree if you have more space in the ground. I had a mango that was grown down around you that really impressed me. Apparently you can grow coconut palms down there too.

I have a mango in a very big pot. One that I have to put into the ground. They get pretty big. I seen some giants around too.

I know theobroma do well in the shade. My only fuck up is that I planted my khat in the middle of my elm and oak tree and now it's overgrown. The khat tree is in no way coming out unless I chop it down and I'm not gonna do that. I guess for now I will just keep it all small. I think I will trim my khat and keep it a small bush.

That's a nice khat man. You could cut it back quite heavily and keep it well clipped and it will become a hedge. If the size is getting too out of hand that is.

That's what I plan to do. But what a waste of material. We'll call it a necessary evil.

Invite some friends over and munch all the foliage before hedging it. By this time your friends will be energetic and you can then get them to weed your garden or do other jobs that need doing. Make a party out of it. It's better for you than alcohol, my friend.

There is no real way to save these leaves for later use is there? They degrade rather quickly, correct?

The most active constituent cathinone does degrade into cathine which is much less active pretty quickly (~7 days) so they lose most of their potency inside of a week. Refrigeration and freezing especially can help delay the conversion perserving potency. Sometimes a wine is made with Catha leaves, but I haven't seen any analyses and I suspect any activity is due to cathine and not cathinone.

Does anyone have any more info on the effects of Khat?

Also Ferrel I know theobroma cacao is somewhat hard to grow but I was wondering if it might be possible to grow out in climate zone 7? I'd surly bring it indoors for winter but would I ever possibly see it fruit in my climate "If I'd even be able to grow it here'?

An eBay vendor I once bought from lives in new jersey. So anything is possible. These came from Hawaii so that's the perfect climate and mine is subtropical. They are under my elm and they get with a tiny bit of sun like a jungle canopy would.

Any diagnosis on all plants? Blacks spots and holes on the cacao plants. Shriveled up novo leaves.

These are the only 2 of all the bunch that are growing good and healthy.

I know the criollo variety of theobroma cacao are susceptible to a myriad of diseases but those crinkled leaves are weird. They are all in the shade and I believe it may not be humid enough for them. The novos I have no idea what's up with the cut of their jib.

Any clues?

IDK what caused it, but I had a batch of novos go the way of those wrinkled/transparent leaves before and it proved fatal to them...

A quarantine may be in order for them to separate the healthy from diseased/infected just to be safe...

Hopefully it doesn't happen to yours though... Like I said, I have no idea what caused it... I just attributed it to the difficulty of raising a novo seedling.

No joke. Once they pass that seedling stage you can almost see them growing they go so quickly.

My novo seedlings did the same things wrinkled up and what not, I made sure they were out of the sun and did not water too much but when underwatered they get worse, so they are a pain in the ass if you have to work and other things, check on them daily. Once they got big enough I gave them some fertilizer for fish aquariums actually and they grew huge so stick with it.

Thanks man. I'm sure they will come through. Those 2 healthy ones haven't skipped a beat so I'm counting on those. I usually am able to care for them most mornings and I do check them daily.

Did the ones that got wrinkled make it?

Some of them did die had about a 50 percent rate of success some of them came back I live in fl so I thought the sun was too strong for them and kept them shady with very little speckled light even now they are in the shade and doing fine. Do not use the fox farms or really strong soil just regular stuff even when they are big I dont use anything special maybe thats wrong but they seem fine now I only use the special fertilizer reef plus once a month only a small capfull.

My soil is fertilomes ultimate potting mix. It doesn't say you start seedling but I have used it for that before. It doesn't have nutrients other than some dolomite. So I don't think that's it. I hope they grow out of it do you know how dry they can get? Maybe it's too much water. I keep them with my cacao plants and I frequently water those. And when I do I water my novos too. I may have to ease up watering.

Thanks brother. It's just percentage wise it's not very good. Before I've had 9 out of 10 make it. Beautiful plants. Well my former career I was never here so they suffered and died. Now I think I am over loving them. I'll ease up water and see what happens to the cacao plants. I think I need more humidity for them.:hmm:

I don't know what it is or what causes it, but I posted an almost identical issue months ago (although slightly less severe) and was told not to worry about it. So, I didn't do anything different, and it never spread and nothing ever came of it...

Hope it is the same for you.

It looks like chlorosis. Switch to rain water / DI water only and it should go away in time. This is just good practice for E. novos. They really don't like too many cations or anions in the water.

All I use is saved up rainwater. Maybe I need to switch to RO water. The rainwater is in Rubbermaid containers since the beginning of spring. I don't know about plastic chemicals and such.

Ah, if you are using rainwater already and solely then that may not be the issue. I doubt the storage of the water in plastic bins to blame either.

Sometimes I get leaves like yellow then fall off. If it is just a few then it doesn't seem to be a problem.

What mix do you have them in?

It's fertilomes ultimate potting mix. Basically peat, perlite, and slow release dolomite. To balance ph. I looked it up and it could be iron deficiency.

I don't think it's Fe deficiency. I don't supplement iron at all and mine are all fine not showing those signs. Also, your major veins are yellow instead of green which isn't what you'd except with Fe deficiency.

Dolomite sounds suspect. It's CaMg(CO3)2 which means that overtime it's releasing CaCO3 and Mg2+ which novo doesn't seem to like much of. My mix is usually comprised of something like some peat, coir, perlite, wormcastings, light compost. I don't add any accessible mineral content or much N.

So it's the m8x itself. Damn that sucks. And I thought it was good. I couldn't find coir at all this year and they love that
This on the other hand had not been doing well since the get go. Only one now looks good. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Well I transplanted these 3 with thw ultimate potting mix and I cut it with coir that thanks to kosmokratorshaman's advice I was able to procure from petsmart. I think they look very good and I'm surprised I haven't had to stake them up.

Beautious!

Never thought to cut the soil mix with coir for novos. I would have figured that would have retained too much moisture for them.

They did awesome with a repot. Even the ones that looked sickly, after the repot, started growing pretty new leaves. I made a mix of coffee grounds and jobes slow release ferts and top dressed the pots. I think they all might make it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well it's cold out. Life in general is cold. I just read my beginning post and it kinda brought tears to my eyes cause here I am. Alone. Living at my parents house again. But slowly I am getting to grow again.

Here they are today.

I attached my light to this desk my mom has. She is gonna be pissed when she sees the damage. But it makes me happy.

Now, I believe the light to be too far. For the novos at least. But it's perfect for my chocolates. This little place is just for winter.

Does anyone see any problems with this ghetto setup? And I'm literally back in the ghetto. :huxleyfacepalm:

My cacaos are the true sufferers here. One has grown very well. But now with season change they are not doing so good. Only one. I tried to just let "shorty" be outside but it just got too cold. And it has lost everything. Like me. The tall one just grew a new leaf. Which leads me to believe it will be alright. But I have never overwintered cacaos.

So any good grower, please reply. I hope this is good. Ambient temps are about 74 Fahrenheit. Should I most them or not? Any tips help.

They seem to be taking to the light.

The one big cacao sprouted a bunch of leaves. And that novo leaf is huge. They are doing well and will stay til about the end of March.

Whadddaya y'all think?

Thanks man. The other one is sprouting little bits but so much slower. Come spring and my novos are gonna really take off. Can't wait for flowers and dare I say, berries. :excited: that's when this thread will really pick up. I think the most critical stages for the novos are over.

How long does it take to go from seed to harvest and how much dried leaf does it yield?

You talking about E. novo right? If so you asking about harvesting enough to do a coke extraction?

You would need WAY more than 1 plant to make it worth while. I wouldn't even consider harvesting with only 1 plant?

I just want to know how much one plant would produce.  I'm not talking about uses yet but your speculation sounds interesting ;-)

I've read a few different numbers on cocaine yield from leafs. They range from "1000lbs of leaf to make 1lb cocaine"  to "leaves can be as much as 1.1%" (although I'm not so sure this is what you might expect from an extraction, IDK). So, either way, you would need like a trash bag full of leaves to produce a few grams.  And, if I'm not mistaken, the actives break down fairly quickly when the leaves dry, so you'd have to harvest all that in pretty much one harvest. Multiply that by how many plants you would have to have to harvest that much and things quickly turn into having to be a full blown coke farm to be able to produce any sort of weight (even for personal party use).

That's my 2c, though. The numbers I threw out there aren't from the best sources, so I'm not sure how accurate they are. But I know the yields are lower than most expect. If it were doable, you'd probably hear more about people doing it. I say if you want to grow the plant, it's mostly for novelty and MAYBE making a tea or chewing some leaves every now and then...

Those novo are looking nice much better then mine. I've been able to keep 2 alive however didn't stake them up and they are leaning heavily but think it will be ok as they get older and have new pups.

I'm honestly not interested in extracting it.  I may just want to chew it.  I've actually extracted coca before...  I yielded about 1gram of coke from half a kilo old dried leaf.  So I already know about that stuff.

I'm asking what someone who grows the plant could expect in good conditions.  Say 3 months growth from seed in good soil / light condtions?  Would you get anything if dried the plant then?  I was just asking roughly... like is this years to grow 100g of leaf matter or months or what?

In all honesty I'd probably be using it in drinks myself but I was trying not to incriminate myself.

I staked them up because they were almost on the ground but the sprouting branches will help even out That lean. I hope to grow more plants later. Next week on payday I'm gonna buy a little 40 dollar shed so I can take them out and give them a better home.

Maybe when it warms up. They are growing so nice right now I can't pull them out of warmth and into the cold. Maybe by the end of March. With this "El niño" around I can't let the kid destroy my plants.

Its been raining or drizzling non-stop for 3 days now. And on top of it cold. Damn these unpredictable south Texas winters. Just 5 days ago it was like 90f. Loopty loop winters. They suck. That's why my plants and not cacti stay inside.

Here they are. Mild 80 degree winters. So they've been outside. The novos. The cacao is inside and finally growing. Slow though. Enjoy.

The tiny little trunks are quite woody. So they are survivors. They ended up falling over and im tempted to cut them to where they are nice and perky but i jist cant bring myself to do it.

They do. The hot summer sum will kill it but the heat does not bother.

Man, I'm so jealous.  May I ask how old they are?  Mine are about 9 months and aren't looking so good...  I've fed it some coffee grounds and sprayed the foliage with epsom salts, so hopefully things will turn around.

You have to have red berries. Then they will shrink and go brown. Last they will germinate. Whole process should last 2 to 3 weeks tops.

I think maxicrop is its counter part. I read about it on other forums. This stuff is great but my plants are a little more advanced in age. And i mean their stems are quite woody.

I have found that with this plant after many times of messing up, it takes time before it goes rootbound.

So i did a side by side comparison and the leaves of thw one on the left numbed my mouth more than the one on thw right. Now in doing this, would it be wise to propogate one and not thw other or do alkaloids build up on older leaves rather than new ones? Im having trouble processing my findings

Beautiful plants ferrel. I had seven sprouts of my own, until they were consumed by a white mold.

How are you going to propagate them?

Such a flimsy thing the flowers drop off mine even when appearing healthy with a very light touch, they flower every few months you won't be waiting long or at least mine do in a grow room

Lol it wasn't a major event I just remember because my seeds came from my guy in Holland and they took ages because of the blockade luckily they survived two weeks in transit and got through customs, its a class A drug here even in seed form. When they get about a year or so old they turn deciduous which is what I was talking about when they drop all their leafs bar a few little spikey tiny leafs, scared the crap out of me but happens every few months usually around the time they flower.
Its very important to know this I killed a couple plants thinking I had to powerful grow lights so stuck them all in the window. You need to just carry on as if normal water only when needed don't change the lighting

So right now i trimmed a bunch of leaves and sort of folded them inwards and added a dash of bakingsoda. So now i have a quid of this stuff in my cheek and mouth is conpletely numb. Its sort of like doing dip.

Can anyone tell me exactly what is going on and why my heart is racing?

Ive done it before and no baking soda but with vaking soda it seems a lot more intense and numbing. Very very nice.

What does the baking soda actually do? Activate it? Man i have never done a quid so big. And boy my pace is up, up and away. For reals. Almost like ADD.

Okay. Had to throw the quid out. Way too intense. I have never done so much leaf. I can see why incan farmers could go all day without a break.

I hope someone has had the same effects. This is not cocaine people.

A lot. Way more than i usually do. Maybe a palm full. Like i said, i Folded them inward and made a little cup. It was very strong. Comparable to cocaine but with no crash. I was not prepared for it to be that strong.

I probably only have a palm full of leaves on my plant. I'll leave it for now.

That sounds good though. :awesomenod:

By drank you mean alcohol then that would have played a big part as you most likely would have created the coca leaf version of a cocaethylene in your liver as well as baking soda which is a known activator. I usually go with 10 smallish leaves or 6 bigger leaves in enough hot water to just cover them with a pinch of bicarb leave it to steep, then once cool enough down the lot filtering the leaves with my teeth. Then chew the leaves as i get bruxism (think thats what its called?) quite strongly so is nice to chew and suck out any remaining alkaloids. Really gets me pumped for work haha
They look good though and the last plant looks over watered by a lot, but I don't know enough about that particular plant. If anything like coca it probably should only be water when there is no moisture left in the pot, I stick my finger in the pot to feel if its got any moisture.

I water them every other day. Its pretty hot here and its only a 16oz cup rainwater. My cacao gets water daily.

Surely I've done cocaine and booze a lot in my day but it is pretty dangerous from what I've read.

Didn't really stop me though haha.

Its just i started drinking. A couple of 24ozers you know. Then i picked up my kids. Im fine by the way at this time. Then when i did a real good sized quid it was on. Until i finally sput the ball out. Then i felt super relaxed. I mean its not cocaine. Its coca leaves. Imagine how high the incas used to get with giant bags of the stuff at hand. All day everyday.

What makes a plant flower and drop those flowers and never set fruit? Cause thats whats happening with my novogranatense. And my pepper plant. At first i blamed it on the heat but it has been mild over here so i dont know what now.

Its cos the flowers died without getting fertilized I think. If fertilized they turn into the fruit and seed, I tried doing it myself (not with jizz ) but it didn't work.

I'm wondering if I cut a flower and try to touch its stamen on the stigma of a flower still on the plant. Maybe could work fertilize them all with one plant. I've got constant flowers on mine the last batch haven't full dropped off and the next set are coming through at the same site.

Yeah mine have been free flowering for a while now. I blieve they will eventually set seed. Its gonna take some time. Like my tamarind tree. At the onset of spring it flowered profusely. All through summer even. No fruit at all. Now it has some fruits. Pollinators everywhere.

My e coca and novo's are all dead, though I'm not surprised as I was growing them in very far from optimal conditions. Still I have plenty of psychotrias still growing in the humidity chamber that were in with the coca's and they have proven indestructable. I doubt I'll bother trying to grow coca again, at least not in the foreseeable future until I maybe live in a dwelling far more suitable for it.

I think I have psychotria for life though, which I'm happy with.

That was your first mistake. Growing them in humidity? They are not jungle plants but mountain. Even still i grow them in the shade in the south texas summer heat. And i mean like 98f in the shade. Not fun at all.

Yeah i know. Nothing ever keeps growing unless its inside. Winter here is the worst for cacao..

Anywho i split the pod open and expected more seeds. Only got 10 seeds. Not bad i guess. Ill keep this updated

Lovely seedlings.

Soon you can make your own chocolate bars.
I like grow similar things.
I have 2 avocado seedlings growing well.
Have no idea how big those will turn out to be.
They are about 50cm tall now.

Does the cacao need high humidity or can they be grown inside in pretty low humidity?

Here are my Avocado seedlings or maybe i should say small plants.
Seems to grow good inside the window.

I just took an avocado bought at the foodstore, saved the seed/nut inside and made guacamole from the avocados.
I put 3 toothpicks in the avocado nut, aimed slightly uppward and so it stood with point upward and base down.
Placed the nut with toothpicks in a glass of water so the toothpicks rested on the rim of the glass and the nut had the lower 1cm in water.
Left it in a window and changed water every 3 days maybe.
Took about 2-3 weeks until started growing and then i planted in a pot.
Funny project, i did it with my kids to show them one can get most seeds to grow.

I wonder how big they will get.
Probably too big, i have to prune them down to big houseplant size later.
