That's what I have for my qt jars, though I do want to upgrade to sfd- but my 1/2 pints already have the 4 inoculation sized holes (dry verm over brf). I was more curious what Muda did personally.

I used a 1/4" hole stuffed tightly with polly for about a year. I switched to a double layer of EZ felt after I started making 72 qts a week. I stuffed poly into 100 lids in one sitting and said fuck poly after that. Now I use a small piece of SFD siliconed over a 1/4" hole. Poly-fill works great it's just a pain to stuff.

I made the swap to EZ felt as well. I got the heavy duty felt that's twice as thick. I don't use glue either, i melt a hole using a torched hot socket and use the melted ring of plastic to hold the felt in place.

ok so i got my 6lb of blue oyster spawn ordered. it should be here in a week or two. i am PCing seven quarts half filled with WBS so hopefully i can turn 6lb of spawn (7quarts) into 14 quarts. i might run out and pick up another case of jars.... how many quart jars; ratio 1:1 of blue oyster grain spawn will it take to inoc 6 buckets of straw??
i am going to use the plastic bag in the bucket teqnique to start the oysters off well with little holes poked through for gas exchange.

I use two quart jars per five gallon pails with good results. It's fully colonized in 8-12 days.

Hey Travel,
Thought I'd give you something easy try. Check out this link. The substrate is "scotts" brand mulch. you can find it pretty much anywhere in north America. It is cheap and comes already hydrated. by far the easiest and cheapest way to go for a beginner. I have also found that wetting it further only leads to possible trich. If the bag comes punctured and seems dry (never had this happen), then I would soak it and then let it sit till the surface is bone dry. Check it out. you wont regret it.

any questions shoot me a PM directly.

Forgot to mention.
I have done this in buckets/tubs/bags/etc. I don't think there is a situation where you cannot use this substrate.
Also, I have switched from WBS to Hard red winter wheat. I have never tried Rye because it isn't really common here. But from what I can tell it is similar. Make sure it is HARD RED WINTER WHEAT and not the SOFT type wheats as they tend to be gooey. I have had way better results since switching. I attribute this to an increase in airflow around the kernels in the jar. WBS kernels are so small that they matt together in the jar and make a much more favourable environment for the organisms you want to avoid. The trade off is less inoculation points. but to be honest I think anything smaller then wheat/rye doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference to warrant using it. Also the spawn breaks up a whole lot easier and when you need to break up a bunch of jars in one sitting... smacking them on a tire for an hour isn't fun when you can whack rye or wheat spawn two times and have perfectly broken up spawn ready to go. Unless your dead broke and really can't spend the extra cents on rye or wheat. I'd highly recommend avoiding WBS. I have used it for almost a decade and although it works... I wish I switch a long time ago.

Ok, sweet! Thanks for the info! Just did some agar to agar transfers today! I'm stoked!

Update on the coir verm. log, I would not waste your time with the coir here is my first flush.

I did start with spores so it could be partly genetics but it seems they are getting very little from the coir.

Thanks for the update! Yeah I found a place with really cheap wheat straw so I'm going that route. One of my master jars is almost 100%! It'll be soon.

Is your bag in a greenhouse type set up or just laid out somewhere?
