Yikes. Thanks for the quick reply. I ran out of water (steam) in my PC so had to turn it off. I will PC for another 30 or so when it cools down. Was going for 70 min total PC time.

*note*
ive found with popcorn ( in my situation), its best to NOT pc much longer than 1 hour 15 min, as p-corn caramelizes easily

caramelization seems to begin right at 1 1/2 hours, and gets worse from there.

Opened the PC this morning and find that the corn has a slight caramel tinge to it and about 4 of the kernels at the bottom are slightly scorched.  :nonono: And I think I have too much water build up. It is enough that you can see it when turning the jars...

Guess I cooked them too long.

Being that I am a stubborn SOB who is always glutton for punishment, I carried on with the inoculation. I fully expect nothing from these 4 jars, but I am going to ride it out for a few days anyhow.

For reference, I followed this Popcorn Tek

I would eagerly listen to alternative methods, but If this fails I will place the blame where it should rightfully go - on myself.

Cheers!

>Guess I cooked them too long.

Or not.

Have growth in all 4 jars and the strongest growth is showing up on a scorched kernel.

Just took a look at the log for this grow and inoculation took place Xmas eve. 6 days seems like a lot for the very beginnings of colonization on grain.

Time will tell... I am still interested in any other preparation methods for popcorn....

Popcorn - Imminent failure becomes SUCCESS [Re: daywalker]
    #2223892 - 01/06/04 05:51 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

well, as I posted originally, from the look of these jars after PC'ing, I expected nothing... but... Behold the power of the mycelium! Evidently, I couldn't even screw it up bad enough.

The jar on the far right is actually colonizing from the inside out.

4 pints @ 3/4 full each

really think I could get all that in a foil pan 8" x 3 3/4"x 2 3/8" ?

honestly, the three 1/2 pint casing he has going now is popping at the seams...

He was a bit leary about trying grains and didn't want to commit to qt. jars.

as the subject reads

I like to go with 2 Quart jars 3/4 full per casing, but I use bigger alluminum pans..

Well, as long as you have at least 2 inches of substrate, it's perfect.

I thought they were haulin' ass myself.  :smirk: I shook when I first saw some growth and not since. I will shake one 'like a polaroid picture' and see what happens.

I thought shaking at the stage the pic shows would cause negative results by breaking up the already well established myc. network too much.
Thanks for the tip

I stand corrected.

The jar recovered like a champ! The others are @ 85%+ so I'll leave them, but I will keep this in mind next time a grain project is attempted.
