Question regarding mycological edibility.

Not sure this falls under the cultivation category, but I wasn't sure where else to post. I achieved two successful flushes with two separate strains using the PF TEK. However, all cakes had separate fruiting times. As such, and to reduce the potential for contamination I waited until all cakes were fruiting before opening up the terrariums for the first harvest. However, by that time there was a mess of spores scattered throughout.
The specimens being propagated are edible, but I am uncertain as to whether they are safe to consume having been heavily inundated with spores. In essence of preservation and further inspection all specimens were dehydrated and are in storage to be re-hydrated at a later date. Maybe used for cooking.
So my question is such: is it safe to eat the spores, or must I try again and be more timely with the harvest?

Totally safe- might get a little gritty and taste worse but other than that you are golden.

For future reference, once they're fruiting you're already giving them fresh air so adding more by opening the container will not contaminate them.
Good job harvesting your first cake!

Uhhhh when you eat them the spores are inside the cap anyway. Why would having them on the outside of the mushroom make any difference....could change the flavor, I don't mind it. They are fine.

What? I said I didn't mind the taste. That's wholly subjective, but the spores are not toxic regardless of how you feel about their palatability.

OP you have your answer. Spores are in no way toxic.

You can always wash the spores off with a bit of water and some gentle rubbing. Pat dry and then dehydrate.
Or just eat

You're eating spores if you're eating shrooms. Whether they are on the inside or outside of the fruit body is irrelevant.
Trying to wash them off is a horrible idea.
