Chocolate Shroom Factory 2005

Shroom chocolates / chocolate shrooms
The Recipe from Mike O'Logical said to use 100 G shrooms / 900G chocolate giving us a 1-9
ratio,
sooooo...
31Grams of goodies X 9 = 279Grams of chocolate
I used the Ghiradelli chocolate because it was the highest quality I could find easily. It
runs about $1.75 for a 4OZ. bar. I used 2.75 bars for this batch.
Break the chocolate into pieces while it's still inside the wrapper.
Empty HALF of the pieces into your double boiler.
A double boiler is simply an upper pan/bowl that rests in/above the warm water in the lower
sauce pan. The pic of the chocolate bar shows the two components- the ($4)stainless steel
mixing bowl and the ($8) saucepan.
Use a medium heat setting to melt the chocolate- don't be in a hurry. Sometimes, the
chocolate has to be stirred for you to see that is actually melted. The pieces will soften
under the heat, but don't quite liquefy until you stir them. Don't use boiling water, it's easy to burn the chocolate.
When the chocolate starts to melt, add the second half of the chocolate pieces and stir. Then put the shrooms into the blender, or a spice/coffee grinder. I like to wait until the last second to grind the shrooms. Grind them to a powder and add
them to the chocolate in 6 or 8 small batches, stirring thoroughly between batches. Thorough
mixing helps to keep the dosage even. I've found a good quality silicone spatula to work
well. A whisk holds too much of the chocolate, and the spatula is also invaluable for
scrapping the sides. Be careful about licking your fingers or spatula if you have plans for later!!!
The choloate/shrooms powder mix will get pretty stiff, so again, the spatula is the best
choice of mixing utensil in my opinion.
Now you need to find something to put the mixture in.
A little water on your spoon and fingertips will keep the chocolate from sticking to them.
The foil baking cups are pretty good. Next time I'll use a second baking cup on top, and
squish it down to make a more uniform piece. The tray shown came out rather uneven as far as
the portions went, so we used 1 of the cups to top off the smallest of the other cups, and
ended up with 11 chocolates from that batch. 31 / 11 = 2.8 grams per piece.
Ice cube trays also worked well in the tests. The chocolates releases from the tray even
without spraying with veggie oil.
The hardest part is getting all the portions the same size. In Mike's recipe, he said to put
it in a square pan and then cut it into squares. My OCD side says we can do better...
So, next I'll try a 'mini-muffin' pan that has 24 small 'cups' in it. I may also try adding
more chocolate so that the volume of the chocolate mix matches the mold size better. For example, if I have 24 (liquid) ounces of choolate/shroom mix, and I fill 24 - 1Oz.
muffin cups, I'll have 24 uniform portions. You would vary the dosage by altering the amount of shrooms added to the chocolate (since
the cup size will always be the same). So If I use 50 grams of shrooms, I'd have 24 - 2gram
doses. If you really wanted to be precise about it, you could weigh the individual foil baking cups
as you were filling them. But I don't think that degree of precision is really needed.

Might this be FAQ-worthy???

Dude, awesome pictures there and I am definately going to try that once I get my hands on some of my faveorite little delectibles again. Now, looking at your final product in the paper cups got me thinking, how else could you incorporate the mushrooms into the chocolate? Suddenly, it hit me, peanut butter cups! My idea has the added benefit of not exposing as much of the shroom powder to heat that many people claim damages potency.
Sorry for the crappy picture, didn't have photoshop on the laptop im currently using. So here's pretty much the method I've dreamed up that one would (theoretically) use to do this.
1. Mix all of the dried mushroom powder into a mixture of peanut butter and sugar, pretty much to create what the inside of what a reeses peanut butter cup would be like.
2. Put down a thin layer of chocolate
3. Put a dollop of the good stuff down
4. Cover PB mix with another layer of chocolate.
Maybe I'm just getting a little creative here, but I think this would be way cooler and WAY tastier too. I can't wait to try this out and I will definately report on the viability of this if I get a chance to. Anybody else think up some (relatively) creative stuff like this?

The truth is, most food doesn't photograph well. The 'food' you see in ad is all plastic moldings.

There is a guy who sells chocolate shrooms where I live and they are delicious!! This is how he makes them
He melts down a whole shit load of Hersheys chocolate candy bars in a double boiler. He has 4 different flavors, chocolate, reeces, butterscotch and Rolo, The Rolo is the best by far. He puts a Rolo, or Reecess, or butterscotch chips in the bottom of a plastic cup. Then he measures 3.5 grams of powdered shrooms into each cup and pours a bunch of the hot freshly melted chocolate over it an mixes well. They taste really good, and the shrooms are show powdery you can't even feel or taste them. Doing it this way is more acurate as well, he knows he's getting exactly 3.5 g's in each chocolate.

would coating the active substance in chocolate prolong it's shelf life vs just having jarred dried goods, sitting with silica packs in a dark drawer?
or would they degrade at the same rate?

I think it would prolong it since I know coating them in honey lasts a longgggg time
