The genus Boletus has been blasted to pieces 3

Boletus has been a genus where mycologists have been putting all fleshy pored mushrooms with smooth olive spores. Turns out that these characteristics evolved independently many times, and not all of the Boletus species were related. Everything that is not in the porcini group is being kicked out of Boletus, and the following new genera have recently been made:
Aureoboletus (for B. mirabilis and several other slimy boletes) Baorangia (for Boletus bicolor) Buchwaldoboletus (saprotrophic, cultivatable boletes) Butyriboletus (for the butter boletes like Boletus appendiculatus) Caloboletus (bitter boletes, for Boletus calopus & B. rupripes) Exsudoporus (for Boletus frostii) Harrya (for Tylopilus chromapes) Hemileccinum (for Boletus subglabripes) Hortiboletus (for Boletus rubellus) Imleria (for Boletus badius) Imperator (for Boletus rhodopurpureus) Lanmaoa (for Boletus carminipes & B. fragrans) Neoboletus (for Boletus erythropus & B. luridiformis) Rheubarbariboletus (for Boletus armeniacus) Rubroboletus (for Boletus satanas & B. eastwoodiae) Suillellus (for Boletus amygdalinus & B. luridus) Sutorius (for Tylopilus eximus) Xerocomellus (for Boletus chrysenteron) Xerocomus (for Boletus subtomentosus)

Yeah, I'll probably ignore this for a while before I learn them.

The Boletus genus has always been a bit of an "ID maze", I was never able to get satisfactory IDs of bolete-type mushrooms. Hopefully this will make identification of these types easier in the future, the genera are grouped according to shared physical characteristics. I've often encountered various red-capped, yellow-pored, blue-bruising boletacea. Now instead of trying to navigate the vast expanse of the Boletus genus, I can start by assuming that it belongs to the genus that contains other red-capped, yellow-pored, blue-bruising boletacea: Rubroboletus. Interesting stuff, some field guides will need to be updated.

My Italian tour is already arranged for next spring & I'm going to do the whole goddamn trip wearing a bright red field marshal's uniform & accompanied by six speed-freak bodyguards bristling with Mace bombs & when I start talking about American writers & the name Tom Wolfe comes up, by god, you're going to wish you were born a fucking iguana!" - Hunter S. I suck at IDing these mostly .... Ends with "Doesnt taste bitter, no staining...possibly edible"

Did this come about from spore scoping or DNA testing? Or both?

DNA sequencing, obviously. Hence Alan's use of the term "blasted" in the headline.

Does this mean that there is some sort of advantage in having 'fleshy pored mushrooms with smooth olive spores'? Isn't that how convergent evolution works, whatever design is most well adapted to suit its niche/environment?

Yes, that works great. Works almost as well as Stereum.
