London Calling can basically be played by retards.  Why is it so fucking great?

I would say it was mainly a combination of two things. First, I think it was exactly what Brian Jones said about the early Rolling Stones a generation earlier: "It just happened that England had the right type of sound and the right sort of visual image
that kids all over the world wanted at that particular time." The other thing was that London Calling was produced by Mott the Hoople producer Guy Stevens. He was always looking for that Stones excitement with the Dylan songwriting talent.

The Clash's first album was pure punk. Give Em Enough Rope was produced by Sandy Pearlman who did Blue Oyster Cult and it reflects that metal influence. The trendiest part of the American audience was waiting for that perfect album to come out. The Sex Pistols were great, but they only had one album of material worth shit and it was all extreme anarchy. Elvis Costello could write as well as anyone, bit he didn't rock enough. the Ramones invented the punk music style, but they intentionally came off as stupid. The Buzzcocks sounded great but were too swishy for the masses.

London Calling was that one perfect album everyone was waiting for. It had everything you could want. They blended genres from the 50's rockabilly, to reggae
to brand new punk. The songwriting was great. All Clash albums were leftist, but London Calling was more balanced and you didn't have to be a commie to fall in love it.

Then the Clash insisted that CBS Records sold it for $3.99 which was incredible because only a handful of double albums were worth two pieces of vinyl. Without the band's knowledge CBS put the sticker "18 songs from the only band matters" on the album cellophane. The album actually had 19 songs with the unlisted single "Train in Vain".

I never understood why they didn't list Train in Vain.

Joe Strummer was a very rudimentary rhythm guitarist. And given his spastic shaking onstage it would be hard to expect more, plus the singing and playing simultaneously is challenging for a lot of people.

I actually think Mick Jones was decent lead guitarist, but whether he could do  on stage what he could in the studio was another story. He was the musical producer for several movies that used Mott The Hoople songs so I'm guessing he was the one who got Guy Stevens to produce London Calling.

I think there may have been some earlier songs that were harder to play, maybe Safe European Home from Give Em Enough Rope. The thing about London Calling was the song selection that was nearly perfect, and the relative primitivism of the  songs themselves and they way they were performed and produced, which fit perfectly with Strummers voice and the band's ability. A lot of bands could play better than the Clash, but how many ever did on this album. The usual critic's statement is that this is the 2nd best double album in history, after Exile on Main Street. For me they are equal (funny that they are both primitive), and I would throw Physical Grafitti in that best double album argument.

I think it was good that Clash fell apart in the early 80's. They were not destined for decades of greatness; what punk band was? Too bad that Joe Strummer died. He was doing some interesting things post-Clash.

They were certainly not brilliant musicians but the songwriting was nonpareil.

They said there was one song they would never play live because it was too complex, The Card Cheat, I think. It doesn't seem too tough, but maybe Mick Jones had to do too much on that song.
