Theres something i dont understand ... (about flying planes)
    #21981234 - 07/22/15 05:40 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I used to go clubbing a lot ... and at practically ALL DJ booths there was a sign "no drinks of any kind".

It also happened to me that this rule was disobeyed once and we all had to go away from the club cos the mixer, the turnable and amp electronics got fried when a drink was spilled...

Im sure you also spilled water/drink on you keyboard once or twice in the past and you know what happened to the keyboard.

My question then is why do pilots allowed to indulge in beverages while in  the cockpit? I mean food is ok but if u want a drink step out of the cockpit, got to the mid section and flirt with a stewardess while enjoying tea of coffee.... cos one bump of turbulence, one air pocket and your coffee is spilled all over avionics and that can be very bad...

2.

Airbus. Cool plane. But whats with the military style joysticks? First officer / co pilot is understandable - its on the right hand side but what about captains? Its on the left and if you right handed how the hell do u fly the plane with your left hand??

I'm sure million dollar passenger planes are equipped to survive a spilled drink.

Airplanes have redundant systems on top of redundant systems. Typically at least 2 of everything for avionics. As well as alternate power routing, and circuit breakers. The sensitive portions are sealed against the elements. If something happens to one unit, they move on to the next unit. And in the background, there are typically mechanical units to back up the primary electronic units.

There should be a mechanical gyro or two up there as well.

The Airbus has a fly by wire system. That joystick is just an electronic input providing a suggestion to the rest of the aircraft systems. That is why many pilots dont like to fly them and prefer Boeings.

it's actually really simple. most of the electronics are in the engine, or in the radio. the avionics are based on simple gravity, magnetic field... etc  if you were to spill in the cockpit there would be as much chance of fucking things up in a car.. it's not going to crash a plane.

for your second question; it is really easy to fly a plane. it's a little left on the stick you lean left right you lean right forward the nose goes down, back nose goes up and so on. push the left foot pedal nose goes right press on the right foot pedal nose goes left. the steering is much less immediate than in a car. it doesn't take nearly as much control. planes almost fly themselves. it's pretty easy, go pay 75 bucks and go up you can even go in the first officer's seat. very fun and informative.

I know how to fly a plane with a military style flight stick, thats not what i was asking tryptkaloids, push left plane turns left push right plane turns right

I was asking how a right handed Captain (who sits in the left seat) can control the plane with his left hand, i know i wouldnt be able to do it proficiently

It takes a bit of adaptation, but it comes quickly. Flight instructor training helps to get all of that out of the way. If you sit in the left seat, you fly with your left hand and if your in the right you fly with your right. Unless there is a center stick in the plane, its pretty universal for most aircraft.

It really doesn't take long for your brain to adjust. But it does take a little getting used to.

That's true too, no one ever has a car malfunction because they spilled a drink on their dashboard.
