Spent Sawdust
    #21980599 - 07/22/15 03:09 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everybody,

I wanted to get an idea from some of the commercial growers on here what you guys do with your spent substrates, namely supplemented sawdust blocks. I have been composting mine but as I scale up my operations (~ 50 bags per week)its getting unreasonable. I'm wondering what my options are for getting rid of the spent blocks.

Thanks for any input!

if you live in a rural area, there has been some work with using spent substrate as livestock feed

I've been using mine to build & mulch walking paths around the yard. Smashed shiitake blocks work great.

I can see using spent straw as a feed for livestock but sawdust?

why can you keep piling them up?  shiitake especially throw off random flushes when it rains and then I pick and dry them for sale.

ya, i guess its because i am running out of room. I can pile them up for a while but eventually i think Ill have to get rid of them. I agree though, my compost pile seems to be quite prolific. the other day I had blue, yellow and pink oyster all producing big flushes at the same time!

Where i live we cannot dry mushrooms for sale unless we are permitted as a food processing operation - so only fresh mushrooms for now.

I have just recently started to look at getting permits ect, and it is a huge hassle. I am totally on board for ensuring food safety for my customers and protecting the environment, but it seems like there is some gate keepers who want to make it hard for people to start a business.

Most fruits in my compost get pretty bugged out, so I just let them be unless they're too good to pass up. I also just dumped a bunch of horse shit on my piles to really get em breaking down and composting.

The blocks I use for making/mulching walkways are pretty much falling apart and disintegrating anyways from being over worked and old. My paths are much cleaner then the compost so any fruits that grow along the way should be in much better shape.

Could break em up, mix with fresh sawdust and reuse them for other species.

I faintly remember reading an article someone posted about using a certain percentage of spent substrate with your fresh to boost yields.

Even if you can grow buttons on it, then you once again are left with spent substrate! lol!  There must be local farmers or even home gardeners who are interested. Post it on craigslist. What ever you do just don't throw them in the garbage.
