Any kind of grain it makes no difference what size jars you use, if anything smaller jars are less prone to partial sterilization and using more small jars gives you a little leeway when doing g2g without a flowhood Its just alot more work to prepare lots of grain with a tiny PC and wastes energy, but if youre not doing alot of grain for now and have time to babysit your PC for multiple cycles then go ahead

This should clarify what I meant.

yeah dude, I see it now you say "a pc" not "a bigger pc". IDK what happened, maybe my brain was expecting you to talk about pc size

I know this thread is old but here's my (limited) experience cultivating without a PC...
I followed all directions as if I was using a PC. Foil on jars, water about halfway up jars. Jars 2/3 full with prepared rye berries. Got a large pot with tight fitting lid. I used small foil balls to lift the jars off the bottom of the pot. I boiled the water for at least 4 hours, can't remember exactly how long but I had to add water more than once, be sure to watch water level if using a pot since you have to boil for so much longer than in a PC.
After I believed they were sterilized, I carefully removed the jars and let them cool sufficiently, I did a grain to grain mycelium transfer with some PE mycelium. All six pint jars seemed to do ok and I transferred them to a monotub (I believe that is the term).
I have read here that the pot method I described here is unreliable and to have a good complete sterilization every time, 8+ hours of boiling with a tight lidded pot is required... Probably best to just shell out $75 for a 23qt pressure cooker on. You'll save gobs of hours and save money on your electricity bill in the long run. Plus you'll have a pressure cooker to cook with if you desire.
