Pressure Cooker Alternative?
    #21980567 - 07/22/15 03:00 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I have the "Power Pressure Cooker XL". I also have quart sized mason jars. I can only fit 3 of these jars in the thing. And guess what? They don't even fit cause they're like an inch or two too tall!!! It's some BS. Do u have to use a pressure cooker??? Like there's gotta be another good alternative...I'm gonna ask some people if I can borrow theirs for a "homemade recipe" or something lol but like can I use like an oven or something idk

you need a pressure cooker for whole grain

unless you want to steam sterilize them at atmospheric pressure for 8+ hours.

a pressure cooker @ 15psi cuts the time to sterilize quart jars of grain down to 90-120m

Definitely don't use a oven. It'll work as a convection and pull contaminats into it. Ask me how I know...

I don't have a pressure cooker either I've been using a tall pot with a tightly sealing lid. Can't say it's the best method but I personally haven't ha a single contaminate yet. I just set a pot on the stove for BRF cakes maybe I'll post a picture of you think I'd help.

Find another PC. Check thrifts store and you might find one dirt cheap.

Then use pint jars instead of quarts or lay the jars on thier side.

I started with a PC that could only run 3 pints or 1 qt laying down. It took a while but I woukd run it all day and get 8 qts done- enough for two tubs.

It really is best to use a pressure cooker if you are doing PF cakes, and it is a requirement if you are doing grain.  You can get away with putting cakes in a pot of boiling water for 90 min, but for grain, you will need a pressure cooker.  Wal-mart has one that holds 7 qt jars for about $70.  You may be able to find one at a thrift store, but IME they usually wont have the pressure weight on top.

Just get jars that fit, if youre not doing cakes you can just use any glass jar with a screwtop
Condiment jars work great and come in all different sizes, just look for what fits your PC best

What??? You're saying I don't need the quart sized if I'm doing the WBS tek for bulk substrate. Literally every tek was like "use the quart sized" but I always thought I could use a smaller jar. Back to wal mart it seems..

My personal favorite jars are the pint jars without shoulders. They colonize super fast and grain cakes slides right out with ease. The only down side is that you have to clean twice as many jars.

Trying to avoid buying a PC to save money will probably end up costing you more in the long run with failures due to insufficient sterilization.

If you are concerned with being flagged as a terrorist or some shit, get a LARGE PC. Not a small shitty 8 qt cooker that can fit in a backpack....

Small PCs suck ass for this hobby and will have you wasting a fuckload of time just to get enough grains for a couple tubs.

there is no extra contam risk by using a smaller pc, it will sterilize your grains just as well
but like you said it'll waste way more time getting enough grain jars done.

I use smaller jars for grain from time to time but it hardly makes sense to use jars smaller than a quart if you're trying to end up with 6-8 quarts of grain

I didn't say a smaller PC will cause contams. I said trying to avoid getting a PC will likely cause failure.

okay maybe I misunderstood I just wanted to comment on this as it seems you're saying small pc = contams:
