Stalled BRF Cakes?
    #21980285 - 07/22/15 01:20 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

First time growing in about a decade, so I'm a little rusty. I decided to start simple and followed the PF Tek Done Right thread with the added gypsum. The only change I made was using regular half-pint jars due to being unable to find wide mouth jars at a reasonable price. I birthed my jars 8 days ago into a shotgun FC. Holes drilled every 2-3 inches, 4-5 inches of perlite at the bottom. Temperature has been in the 70s, humidity in the 90s the entire time. I have two lights at 6500K going on a 12/12 schedule to match daylight hours. I am misting 3-4 times per day, fanning 5-6 times. There was one day I had to be gone and was only able to mist/fan once in the morning and once at night.

I dunked and rolled, but two of my eight cakes had a lot of the verm fall off after rolling due to misting too quickly after rolling. Those two have a lot of primordia and knotting, but they have been like that for about four days now without any actual pins forming. The cakes that have more vermiculite on them have some small primordia, but that is all.

I'm worried I may have birthed a little early. I thought I had given them a full week to consolidate, but they only took about 2.5 weeks to colonize fully, so they were only in the jars for 3.5 weeks total.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

they'll just finish consolidating in the fc. Does your fc have any holes? Basic principles of the sgfc

the white stuff in the 1st pic looks a bit off to me but it could just be the lights.
if it looks different to you IRL try taking a frontal pic of it.

Holes are drilled a little less often than every 2 inches because the plastic was cracking some and I was worried about too much humidity getting out, but they are drilled around all six sides.

Tried to take a better picture of the cake, but I don't want to disturb it too much, hopefully you can get better info on this pic.

I'm more concerned about fresh air not getting in

hard to say whats up with the cake to the left, the thick white growth looks kinda off to me.

is your chamber elevated? like 5" so air can come up through the bottom?
drill more holes. let the drill do the work, dont push it, set it to drill in reverse and try having something under the plastic while you do it.

I knew I was doing something stupid. I had stacked it on top of another tub so that it would be elevated from the ground and didn't even think about how that would completely cover all of the holes on the bottom. I just put a couple empty jars at each corner to balance it on, so now it's elevated about six inches above the other tub.

I'll give it a couple days as is, don't want to mess with it that much while it has the cakes inside. I'll definitely drill a few more holes before my next grow, or just move on to a better system. Thanks for the advice!

you'd also get a lot more light into your tub if you put the light on the side. the opaque/blue color stops a lot of it.

and keep the sgfc at least a couple feet away from any walls.

I actually have two lights, you can see the outline of the second one on the left side of my picture of the tub. I thought I'd read that the blue transparent lids are OK for letting light in, but that's why I set up the second just in case. I will pull further out from the wall, I had kind of hidden it a bit when some friends coming over this weekend, good call on that one.

Looks like more air exchange was the answer, as it seems to usually be. Already have three pins now! Thanks again for helping out.
