Lets share the various mental tricks we've discovered

I'll start with an example. My friend and I were trying to balance on one foot with our eyes closed. (harder than it sounds if you've not tried it.) He later shared the idea of mentally picturing a pendulum that reacts to your bodies balance. You've got to practice a bit to get the inner pendulum to react to your body realistically, but it works quite well for balancing with your eyes closed.
Another trick, one that has been around for thousands of years, is called a memory palace. You visualize a building of some sort, I use my own house, and then fill it with objects that represent things you want to remember. Works quite well for remembering meaningful symbols, sigils or whatever.
So based on those two examples, what mental tricks do you have to share? Visualization seems to be very useful.
Me and my friends were discussing whether or not practicing a sport in your mind would actually benefit your skill level. This spawned from discussing the educational applications of virtual reality, and deciding which method of VR will be best for physical education. The two options being 1)control all virtual actions with the mind, no physical movement.(brain/computer interfaces are real) OR 2)A 3 dimensional treadmill and headset, your body is your controller, physical movement

visualizing in your mind helps but visualizing in your mind while on the field helps even more

that palace idea is cool
I have lots of re-occuring dreams -one of them is me climbing through back yards -another is going down into a ditch and finding an underground facility they feel as real as my life at times because I've dreamed them up before
the people who spoke latin used to make up crazy nonsense stories but in them retain some memory or truth kind of like inception

I mastered the memory palace at one point, forgot it a while ago though because I stopped using it for the most part but was EXTREMELY good for quick memorizing. Works the best if you do a place you are extremely familiar with, something you can already walk through in your head and remember in detail before even practicing. House, your job, somewhere you are extremely familiar with.
It is a "mental trick" and works to get free beer at bars and makes people think you are doing it mentally. take 5 pennies, cut one in half, so that you have 4 1/2 pennies. Bring them with you to a bar. Tell someone (a friend or stranger you've been chatting with) that you can predict a number they'll end up with before they even pick it, and to verify that you're telling the truth you'll make the guess in pennies before they pick a number (pull out 4 1/2 pennies, hide the half penny, and pretend to count them) and say that you made your guess but don't show them how many you picked.
Tell them to pick any 2 digit number, 11-99, then say "every two digit number is made up of two digits, 33 being 3 and 3, 43 being 4 and 3, take whatever two digit number you picked and add the two numbers that make it up together, and subtract them from your original two digit number. (lets say I picked 79, 7+9=16, 79-16=63) Now you should be left with a new two digit number, now take the two digits that make up that number and add them together, and then divide that number by 2 (6+3=9...9/2=4.5)
Works with every single two digit number, since you told them you were using pennies to make your guess, they'll most likely be willing to jump all over the bet whne they end up with 4.5, boom, now you have a new friend and a free beer. There's shit tons like this, technically "mental tricks" because it looks like you're guessing what they're doing before they do it, when really the answer is predetermined. I loved mentalism when I was a kid and that's how I mastered the memory palace at the time too and all of mentalism is basically mental tricks.

Association works well with remembering, like objects in a familiar room. Other tips are to associate it with something ridiculous like a gorilla holding a bag of potatoes that you plan to buy. To remember names, repeat the name immediately after you hear it and make some silly association with it like frank becomes a hot dog, bob becomes bob vila or some other celebrity, mary becomes Marilyn Monroe, etc.
To remember things you plan to do in a day, visualize your day, doing 2 things in the morning and two in the afternoon, perhaps you writing letter, mailing them then later pruning plants and mowing the lawn. You see little images of yourself doing those things in the day. A little image of you writing something, putting it in the blue box, then a pair of pruners and the lawn mower.
To learn a skill, you can visualize yourself doing it, you can go through the motions in slow action. Even something you have to do fast, do it very slowly in practice which helps you learn the movements then do it faster.

Take 10 deep breaths to ease anxiety. It sounds so obvious, and when you're panicking you never think of this, but usually if you just breathe deep for a bit you feel a bit better. It won't fix everything but it helps regain some control over your body.

i always try to keep a perspective of the entire situation, don't just become completely engrossed in your view, ponder what others might be seeing and thinking, it will help you anticipate their possible choices and motives.

when I first stated doing mushrooms I noticed little flashbacks.. I basically just remember how the mushrooms change my visual field and make it happen.. it's hard to explain the logistics of it.. you know how you see the wood grain flow or the carpet dance? just see it move.. it's hard to put into words
