Oven sterilizing of PF Jars.
    #2197872 - 12/23/03 01:38 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

My friend is curious about sterilizing jars in the oven. He's read only teks that involve steam sterilization. Could an oven bag with a bit of water be used instead of a pressure cooker? If kept at like 200, he doesn't think it'll cook them, but wanted to know the opinions of some others.

I wouldn't try it. It's hard to get the water content right and most probably the substrate will get too dry.
Read about "fractional sterilization", which is way more safe than the oven although it might take longer.
Anyway, you should start thinking about buying a PC....

If you are using pf jars you can steam them for 1.5 hours on the stove in a big pot with a lid. Just keep them off of the bottom of the pot with an old shirt or towel.

MAIA is right when he says one of the biggest problems with oven sterilization is getting the water content right. It is tricky but can be done. Easier to just stick with the more common way of sterilizing.

You might want to look into using hominy and vermiculite.

yeah, he's looking into a PC, but it's a bit pricey. He should splurge.
