Buried Spent Reishi Block Experiment * 2
    #21975973 - 07/21/15 03:01 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Well, I buried these spent reishi blocks sometime in early spring. All of them were over a year old and had flushed antlers 2-3 times prior to me deciding to bury them.

I put 7 blocks per row and did 5 rows.

Then dumped a shit ton of organic spent coffee grounds on top of everything before covering them up with dirt and mulching them with left over straw from making oyster columns. I sorta framed the bed off and put up some 1/2 hoops for poly & shade cloth that I never got around to putting on.

A week or so ago, I noticed some primordia forming.

And here they are today

I can only see 3 so far, but more are likely still under the straw. Bummer that my dog and kids have been running thru part of the bed all summer - the top left corner section of the bed might not produce but I've still got high hopes for most of it.

Its also interesting to point out that my planted reishi are starting to fruit at the same time that I'm just starting to find wild fruits growing.
Here's a stash box with recently harvested wild ganoderma.

I wish I would have buried my Reishi block but the ground was frozen then.

It looks a lot like Ganoderma lingzhi, the traditional Asian reishi, when it is mature are the pores sort of yellow?

These pores aren't yellow yet, but I did just harvest several large Reishi from my outdoor mushroom hoop house and they were very yellow. I've got a bunch of different strains running in there and kinda lost track which ones were the Everything Mushroom strain but your probably right.

I've been getting some seriously awesome growth in the hoop house from blocks that were already harvested once indoors. I'll probably never grow another indoor Reishi unless I'm trying for antlers.

I'm also thinking that in an environment with a lot of other (micro)organisms they might produce more medicinal compounds.
