PC can't get up to pressure

It's a 23 quart Presto cooker. There's no visible leaks that I can see, yet this bitch wont get past 7 PSI without me holding the weight down, which is apparently a bad thing.
Gauge is wrong? I thought this was most likely since the weight is meant to determine pressure, right? Give a fuck about a gauge etc? Well my grain jars contaminated, so presumably something is faulty, but I've no idea what since it looks fine, no cracks or leaks etc.
Has anyone had this issue?
Would it be a bad idea to add weight to the gauge? The worst that'll happen is the rubber bung will blow out, right?

Did you read your instructions manual once, twice, three times?
For some reason I get the suspicion that the PC isn't your problem.

You shouldn't have to hold the weight to reach pressure...

Your weight or steam vent may be damaged. Is it releasing pressure constantly?

OP you are probably using too much water.

The water level doesn't change the outcome. I've tried a cup, I've tried 3 quarts.
I would assume it was working fine if the gauge didn't say 7PSI when the weight started rocking, and if my grain jar test hadn't failed.

I talked to Presto about it and they're saying it's probably the gauge which is faulty... I'll have to run some more grain jar tests.

How big were the jars and how long did you cook? did you keep any uninoculated jars which will rule out contams from your inoculant.

7 jars, 1 layer, for 1 hour 30 minutes. they were all left uninoculated.
blackout, I saw some of your fractional sterilization posts when looking for a silver lining in this cloud. Did you ever get a tek down?

I never wrote a tek, I have done it many times, in different manners with good success, I had a thread discussing what was required http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21174437.
I can't recall ever seeing somebody actually doing tyndallization/fractional sterilization as instructed by John Tyndall. I just see loads of people doing it there own way and saying they had failures, exactly what Tyndall predicted, just proving him right, not wrong.
There is no need for you to do it, as your PC sounds fine to me. Could you get a loan of a second gauge, maybe buy a new PC in a shop and return it after you confirm its the gauge.

What kind of heat source are you using. I use a hot plate and when I put a large cooker--23 quart is large--on, I don't get good pressure. Big cooker needs good heat source.

23 quart isn't large.
And if its a presto you're using a hot plate with, I'd be careful because the bottom could warp.

Sometimes the leak can be small and hard to detect visually. You might put your ear up the the lid and go around in a circle. I know this sounds like stupid advice but I've run into this issue more than once and listening for that tiny hiss solved the problem when nothing else seemed out of whack.

The Gauge is faulty, if the weight starts rocking it hit 15 psi and you're good in my experience the weight is more accurate than the gauge.

Large is relative.
I have not run into the bottom warp problem yet. I am using a new Presto 8 quart. Tall and narrow. Has not failed me yet, but not much room in there for more than 3 quart jars at one time. But, hey, I am not growing for an army. I am content with it. I know that some people like big yields for reasons other than distribution. They want to experiment with extraction or cloning or whatever.

The pressure cooker doesn't affect your yield. It affects how long you sit around with your thumb up your ass for x amount of jars.

Well, totally, but if you had to do 4x more runs because your PC was tiny, you might run out of fat ones.

We're talking about a vicious cycle of fat ones that could be nipped (wait for it) in the bud by making a small investment.
