varieties of coir

I know that there is a search engine for this kind of question but I have used it without getting the itch of m y question scratched. Here is the problem: I went to Menard's this morning and found a 24 quart bag of coco fiber--fluffy and loose--that is marketed as a medium wherein to plant seeds. The cost was relatively low--3.50$. This material contains some organically derived fertilizer (very low NPK numbers) Anyway, I am wondering if this could not be used instead of the pet store stuff. For one thing it is easier to use. The cost is pretty much the same, or actually this stuff is cheaper. Please forgive if this question has been answered to death. I could find the answers.

I have used the loose coir from eco earth in all my grows so far with good success. I haven't heard of any fertilizers being used in this brand, it claims to be all-natural.
If it is coconut fiber based, then it'll be good to use. But i would try to avoid the fertilizers. Look for the eco earth brand, it's in almost every pet store I've been to.

You can use it, I just always use Eco earth coir in brick form because its always cheaper. At least in my area.
I suspect there's alot of fertilizer or some other filler in that coir though because 3.50 for 24qt seems a bit cheap to me

I use Nature's Footprint "Worm Factory" 650g coir bricks. Get 'em on Amazon for $21 for a 5-pack.

I just buy my coir at pet smart. $7.50/3pk
There's some website around here that sells coir cheap as dirt though if you buy in bulk.

I will check it out. Thanks. However, if the price differential makes it worth it, I will test this Menard's stuff and see how it produces.

Yes, I have seen that at Pet Smart. probably that is about the best deal I have seen for brick coir.

That is about 4.20$ per brick. The Pet Smart deal is a lot better than that--2.50$ per brick.

Use the cheapest I can find online. Some coir seems to absorb and expand a lot more than others is only quality difference I have run across.
And I hazard a guess that you could use the growing medium with no ill effect, don't see why low amount of organic fertilizer would (be like horse manure) but that's just a guess.

Next time I need, I think I'm going to check the pet store. Thanks!

Here's the website I was referencing earlier. Less than 5 bucks for 3pk.
I haven't used them, but I know many people who have.

I live in a major metropolitan area but still had to go to three different stores before I found what dried compressed coco coir bricks. No one in the stores knew what the hell I was talking about.
Even when I asked for the 'reptile supplies' and was pointed to the correct isle at a nearby mega pet store it took me a while to actually see where coir blocks were located. It wasn't exactly prominently displayed.
IME if you have the time it's much easier to order online rather than driving around spending a couple of hours on a pretty minor purchase.

Couple of hours? LOL
You must live in a shit city, or not know where to find it quickly.
I drove less than 3 miles, first pet store I went in, I found it in less than 5 minutes.
