Pit's First Grow

Greetings fellow shroomers!
So I've always wanted to grow mushrooms (maybe not always but for like 20 years) I first looked into it in like 1997 when I was in high school. But I couldn't embark on this journey at that time since my household didn't have a pressure cooker. Plus, as into biology as I was at the time it did sound like mycology may be a bit too technical for me.
Fast-forward to now. A few months ago I had some really good studying with some bloomers a buddy gave me. It got me to thinking, I should look into growing again. Man am I glad I did, and even more glad I found this site.
No joke, I've been reading so much stuff here, some nights I feel like my eyes are going to bleed. Anyhow, watched the vids, ordered some spores, bought a PC, some jars, and I am off to the races. For my first time around I think I will just do the BRF cakes while I continue learning.
I got some Cambodian spores. Prepped and sterilized jars on Friday night, went out and partied while they cooled off. Saturday morning I inoculated 5 half-pint jars. While it's only been two days, so far they look OK. And I even think I see mycelium starting to grow. It's very faint, but its there, and I hope its not something unwanted
Once I have some real colonization going I'll post some pics up.
Thanks to all the growers out there for putting together such amazing and easy to follow teks.
Cheers, Pit

Have fun man. It really is an enjoyable hobby, i love going through all the necessary steps to obtain the most potent fruits possible.
Also when starting from MS, I usually don'y see growth in brf cakes until at least 5 days. It could be really fast growth or maybe some cobweb, since you said it's very faint looking. Anyway, improving your sterile techniques will help you greatly in this hobby and save you a lot of stress.

A pressure cooker is not needed for brf cakes. They can be steam sterilized for 120 mins on a rack above boiling water.
Agar is great when it comes to creating clean spawn. Pasty agar tek is great. A pressure cooker is need for agar tho. So at least you obtained one
My favorite is to let the jars invitro pin before I pull and birth them. It takes a while for the colonization but works great for me.
Invitro pins can be like this:

If your seeing growth after two days, those were either the freshest spores in history or something is amiss. But I am going to hope they were the freshest spores in history

Congratulations dude. It's like crack when you get started, you don't want to stop. It's nice to have a pc when you decide to go bulk though. Much more rewarding I usually see growth by day 3 for jars. It's faint but it's there.

Dude these are Cam and are like the fastest colonizing strain according to the various vendors
In all seriousness though, they still look OK. More new growth today (whatever it is). Perhaps they're going fast because I keep my thermostat at like 79f/26c most of the day and only drop down to like 74 to go to sleep?
One thing keeping my hopes up is that the "growth" is pretty much right in line with the holes in the lid that I inoculated from. Well that and there is no discoloration or odor "yet".
Anywho here is a pic of one of the jars. The pic isnt that great. Whatcha guys/gals think?

Good luck dude! I had first sign of mycelium on day 3 with some Golden Teachers. From what I understand compete darkness isn't the best for incubation so some light is good. ( solong as it isn't direct sunlight) Its only day 18 for me and the GT's are already at 1/4th colonized at best. I'm keeping them in the cupboard above the fridge where its consistently 77-84 degrees. Just a thought for ya. again good luck def keep us posted.

How are you able to tell of odor out of a tiny hole?

That's what I was thinking, you would be able to see the contam way before being able to smell anything. The uncovered holes may give off a sour smell if there is some serious contam but you should have tossed it way before getting to that point.

70-75 is ideally what you want, and higher is considered counterproductive

Things are still looking good over here I reckon.
Checked the jars again today and I think everything is in order. One is lagging a little bit behind the rest, but it looks pretty good tome so far.

We'll update again next week. Wish me luck.

I actually just ordered a Cambodian syringe for a spawn bag side project I wanted to start. I remember you saying its like the fastest growing strain acording to allot of people. I ordered 1 sterilized rye berry spawn bag for invetro or mini monotube and 5 grow bags with filters and clamps for my own sub-strait experiments.

It was all pretty cheap as well. Shoutouts to Shroom Supply and Free Spores for some great prices. It all came out around 30 bucks. Both sites I use for mycology study purposes only.

So far all 5 cakes look good. I even had what looked like primordia or invitro pins forming in 4 jars. So I birthed 4 of them last night and soaked them 24 hours. The 5th one still has a small uncolonized patch, it was always a bit behind the others.
I made a SGFC to spec (1/4" holes every 2" on all 6 sides etc)
I rolled the cakes and placed them in the SGFC on jar lids. After letting them sit for about 30 minutes or so I gave them a good misting.
I then mixed up another 5 jars and PC'd them in preparation for round 2. So far I've learned a lot and feel pretty lucky as things have gone so smoothly (knock on wood) thanks to the good folks here. Hopefully i'll see have pics f fruits to share soon.
