Shaking grain jars

I know it's common practice amongst most growers to break up grain jars at around 30% via hitting it against a bike tire or another hard surface to increase colonization times. But I was wondering if this may damage the growing mycelium and possibly make it more prone to contams once spawned.. Or does smacking the jars against a hard surface to break up the grains not damage the mycelium in any way?

I did it on my first round of jars (multispore syringe inoculated). Didn't seem to hurt them in any noticeable way.
Second round (monoculture agar inoculated) colonized so fast that it wasn't necessary to do anything to help it along.

No harm done
However, if they do not recolonize after a shake it's likely that it is contaminated

It definitely damages it in some way. You're paying a metabolic cost to repair the damage in exchange for rapid colonization. Most everyone agrees this is totally worth.
In terms of contamination, it has two effects:
The more rapid colonization will allow less time for contams to develop. Especially something like bacteria could develop much more in the uncolonized areas of an unshaken jar than it could surrounded by rapidly growing mycellium.
By breaking up contaminants, it will make them harder to see if they are in small proportions.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

You can shake/g2g a culture to insane amounts.
Shaking isn't going to hurt it. Just don't beat the shit out of it.

Nah, breaking up mycelium is damaging to the mycelium, but not to a major degree to where it's too terribly notice-able. Otherwise, it's doubted that breaking up grain jars at 30% colonization would be a common practice/staple of mushroom cultivation.
Grain jars contaminating after the shake ISN'T a symptom of the mushroom mycelium being broke up, but rather an invader riding along with the mycelium that germinates after being shook.

Pre-shake (Looks about 30-40%)
 Post-shake
Now time to sit back and relax!!

If you add enough LC there is often no need to shake, except after its initial injection of course.
However you have to account for the added moisture and have grains drier than normal.

These jars were inoculated with a fully colonized brf paste wedge. I shook the jars once to distribute the piece within the grains. The first pic was after a week of colonizing. It should be done in another 5 days I hope.
