Please excuse my childlike ignorance(I feel like the little kid who giggles when they first hear someone speaking a different language) but what the hell are these "puffers"?

Alchemy is somewhat hard to get into begause of how secretive the majority of alchemists are however if you're interested in learning it I'd suggest reading the books "Practical Alchemy" by Robert Allen Bartlett, "The Way of the Crucible" By Bartlett, and "The Art of Distillation" by John French
Thank you.

Whatever you think would be most useful for someone who knows very little about this subject but is very curious.

I think its cool how they can encode vast amounts of information in visual imagery or metaphors, the alchemist seems to have a really very poetic way of thinking. Its like science just with no context because it concerns itself with everything, chemistry, psychology, cosmogony, astrology, biology all at once, the same with how it is communicated, all languages all at once, meaningful, but most people used to more specialised languages will just get noise. I don't do anything practical but the subject is interesting to me.

Here is an old license plate. But my car has had an ALCHEMY plate for over 20 years, if that answers your question. Why your inquiry comes across as defensive and even combative is something that will not exactly endear you to members of these forums. Frankly, you must obviously be a newbie yourself based on your tone. I've been involved with alchemy on different levels for 40+ years, and I am still a student of it myself. You will not make progress in this or any esoteric discipline without the requisite humility.

Well, yeah, but that depends on what you're interested in reading: history, biography, ancient alchemists, contemporary alchemists, Facebook alchemy groups, manuals on how to proceed with laboratory alchemy (beginning with the Wet Way of Spagyric plant alchemy). One does not jump into the Dry Way of athanors (furnaces), metals and glasses (Israel Regardie was not good at this after training with Frater Albertus). I am still slogging through Isaac Newton: The Last Sorcerer and recently read Hartmann's The Life of Paracelsus. I am currently not doing laboratory alchemy, and I was only doing so after decades of psychospiritual alchemy, primarily using categories as a metaphor for psychotherapy, as I had a lot of experience with Jungian analysis and training. I am waiting for that spirit to motivate me again, but there are some dedicated practitioners out there: Mark Stavish, Robert Alan Bartlett, Steve Kalec, Dennis William Hauck http://dwhauck.com , Manfred Junius (deceased), and of course, all of these men have written excellent books.

That's a nice set up. Impressive library, too. Are those Fulcanelli materials above the DSM-IV (fourth picture, next to the right-side chair, with the black, red, and beige)?

I don't think they're visible here, but I do own The Dwellings of the Philosophers and The Mysteries of the Cathedrals. The first set me back $28 (I've seen it priced at $280), from a guy whose bookstore was going out of business. He was pleased it was going to a good home. The lab set up derives from childhood as well as from the spontaneous gift of a new science chairperson in the school I was employed in. He had no idea I had been looking for organic chem glassware, so I found it to be Synchronistic/Providential.

Dude, I respect the set up, & I respect the collection of books. But is it wise to have a flame near them? Much less a chemistry set. I'm not depreciating any skill you may have, but accidents do happen. I trust you've a fire extinguisher near-by if you wish not to?

If you look closely, behind the silver heating mantle in the 2nd and 3rd pics, there is a 3/4" thick of Lucite® serving as a reflective heat shield. (You can see some light reflection). It's visible in the first pic too, with the hot plate before I bought the heating mantle. There is a screw-in hook holding the left top corner of the heat shield to the book shelf. I might install another heat shield (a disassembled clear folding table of my mom's) when I decide to work at it again. BTW, you're not the first one to make that suggestion, the plastic is very clear.
There IS a fire extinguisher in the closet just outside the study (whether it is still functional is a good question. I should replace it). Thanks for the concern!
