Is high temp hurting my yields?
    #21969971 - 07/20/15 09:39 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

For all those oyster lovers out there, have you guys noticed any correlation between fruiting temp and biological efficiency?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out why the yield from my last straw log was so low.

I just harvested a p. columbinus mini straw log with 2 lbs of dry substrate and got about a 1/2 pound harvest on the first flush.  I'm a little disappointed, but my temps were high (75-77) and I had to use an agar wedge from a third flush specimen - grew out pretty quickly on the plate though, very vigorous.

I've got 5 logs of king oyster colonizing right now but I'm worried that their similar temperature range to the blues will leave me in the same position come harvest time if I fruit in my greenhouse.  My only other option is to move the logs to the basement when it's time to fruit, however, the basement is carpeted and has had mold problems in the past.

Any suggestions?  If I did try to fruit in my moldy basement, do you think I'd get one decent flush before having to toss the logs?

Blue oysters and king oysters do best fruiting in colder temperatures. You'll be much happier with the results if you can drop temps. by at least 10 degrees.

I don't think it's the heat, I have fruited blue oysters in a 90-95f greenhouse.
They aren't as dark and meaty, but I haven't noticed a dramatic weight difference.

Depends on the strain, I switched from a winter oyster to Florida Oyster that prefers 18-24C, I'll be switching back come September.

Yes you will lose yield if you dont match strain to temperature. Kings especially like it much cooler.

Half a pound isn't terrible off a tiny log

I'd go to the basement  in that heat they won't really fruit maybe if it drops during the night and than that's the max during the day. But there is mold every where the cooler temps should help  against mold as opposed to the heat.  And if they do start pinning and every things looking good and  you get one really hot day they all die and rot in my experience. They like it in the 50 to 60 degrees even colder.
