Anyone into Archery?

Hey guys! I'm just starting to get into archery again, mainly because I haven't had enough time in the past year and a half. I prefer traditional archery, I even made my own bow and I make my own arrows. Though I do own a 20 pound plastic recurve bow and some store bought target arrows to practice with.
I'm hoping to get good enough and enter a contest or two for the fun of it eventually. Anyone know the size of target or the distance usually in traditional archery contests?
Anyways, are you guys into archery? What kind of bow do you have? How long have you been shooting?

I love shooting a bow. I started on a little red bear recurve and then graduated up to my dad's compound, which I have no idea who makes it because there's no markings on it and it's painted black camo.
I never got into contests other than just the guys bullshitting but we usually started off with a bullseye a little smaller than your average frisbee and stepped off 30 yards, and then went from there with the 4 sight pins.
I was up at the bow shop about a year ago and the bows today are fucking incredible, they all look like toys and weigh next to nothing. It's on my list if I ever get some toy money, to get a nice new lifetime bow and get back to precision shooting.
On a side note I had a woodshop teacher that used to make long bows. You got any pics of what you're putting together? I'd love to see what you're up too.

Yeah bows today are freaking amazing. But personally I think a lot of the designs take away from the skill of the archer. It makes it much more of a pick up and shoot pretty decently. Archery without all the sights and attachments is more about the build up of skill IMO.
I actually have a red bear recurve! That was teh plastic one I was talking about I used to have a compound one aswell, but I'm not a bigfan of compound bows.
I'll try and take a pic of the bow I made later today. I actually am planning to make a hickory longbow soon. But all I have is the stave at the moment.
I'm making some arrows this weekend though. At least 3, but probably not more then 6. Making traditional arrows from start to finish takes a long ass time though.

im no pro but i have made some bows in the past but they always have a pretty short shelf life.
what am i doing wrong or is this an inherent side effect to making bows out of nature?

I've made a few bows, but I gave most of them away but my strongest one. That same bow has lasted me 5 years, and the others are still around except one(person dry fired his bow).
But it depends on how you made your bow. Did you cure it afterwards? Did it have a backing? Or was the back of the bow only on one growth ring? Also did you dry fire it or keep it strung all the time?

I've always appreciated the art and grace of archery. I prefer them to guns because there's just more beauty in using a bow. Since I live in the city, archery isn't really something I have the luxury of doing often. However, I bought and 80 lbs pistol crossbow just for fun. That thing is so not a toy as it's usually advertised. When the zombie Apocalypse strikes, its close range head-shot time! I bought a foregrip to make it easier to use but I fucked up and bought the wrong one. I'm sure I can modify it, though. I like to shoot it in my room and see just what exactly it can and cant go through. Let me put this way: apples, thick cardboard, licence plates, walls, bookcases, metal cans. My bolts go through them like I could never believe. Imagine getting shot with that. If it can take out a license plate mounted to the wall, it'll have no problem going through you.

I shoot a PSE compound. I have viper sights and a quick release, but it still feels natural to shoot. I've taken it hunting a few times, but have yet to shoot a deer. They seem to be more elusive than I imagined.

It depends on the style of bow you are wanting to make. I usually make D curve long bows bows from hickory or osage orange. I've been working on a hickory bow, but my draw knife broke and I'm low on funds at the moment.
It also matters how much of the actual pieces you wanna make. It can be as simple as one piece of wood, or have multiple layers and backings or even dissemble. But bow making does take quite a bit of skill. Especially if you work from scratch.

I'm a huge fan of traditional archery hunting, every year I swear I'm going to stick with my favorite Bear Kodiak Mag all the way through rifle season...then one day i take a rifle with the bow, then the whole things blown, but I usually take my best deer during archery season, the past few years it seems like the deer rutted later in the year and that hasn't been the case, but usually archery season puts you right in line with some of the best chances of getting a good one. Theres plenty of great options for bows, arrows and so on, find a shop with a range and go try some things out, figure out what feels right and shoots right. If I was new to this and getting a first bow to hunt with, I'd try to at least get a 55lb recurve. I've got a 60lb longbow that I still occasionally frog gig with(its not really frog gigging if you use a bow I suppose), I use to shoot rabbits with it when the dogs would get the close, I'm not angry enough at rabbits to want to kill one anymore, and I've done in some sitting ducks from a levee with snare points on several occasions, seemed like the most sporting way to dispatch ducks in an unsportsman like manor.... Whatever you choose, get a good target and start shooting all you're arm can handle...Dont be the guy who doesn't shoot all year long, practices for an hour and decides to go try his skill on something thats alive only to wound it, ruin the meat, and any deserving hunters chance at it...

I bought a crossbow this year for hunting this year, the Barnett penetrator its wickid. I have bought multiple types of broad heads so far my favorites are the toxic broad head and the g5 strikers both 100 grain on luminock bolts.

Love hunting archery my favorite. Specially since the season is super long. I have two compounds but anymore i just use my old 50# recurve. Ill post a pic up later when im home.
So much to appreciat about bow, much skill goes into it with coordination and muscle memory.
No offense crossbow guys but i will never use a crossbows. They are for cheaters and lazys. Unless your too old to draw a bow then they are okay for you old farts.

Bow hunting is great, and the season is usually pretty long.
I just got back from shooting my plastic recurve. I don't know the weight on it, but I'd guess 20-25 pounds. I made a new bow string for it earlier, so I was breaking the string in. At first it was so iffy if I could get a shot or not, since the string was stretching into place. But I finally was able to shoot consitently and accurately.
The arrows I was shooting are crap. they're cheap 80 cent arrows from walmart. They do work good for practiicng accuracy and stuff though. Also there's no chance of breaking the arrows I make for hunting(which take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to make each).
I still am working on my set of 9 hunting arrows I'm hoping to take out in a few months. They're all notched, lengthed, and have the arrow points in, but I need to paint my crest and fletch them. I just need to find the time to finish them.

I just bought a Compound Bow from a buddy for a good price.
First one I ever shot.
It is badass.
Can't wait to set up some targets.
I haven't shot a bow in years.

So I searched up the plastic bow I use to practice, apparently it's a youth bow that some people estimated had a weight no more than 10 pounds. Which is weird, because this bow seems to have a weight of like 20-30 pounds. It's pretty old(it was my dad's bow when he was a kid), so I'm thinking maybe it got stronger? It's still fun to shoot though.
What techniques do you guys use to shoot your bow? Like the technique for holding the nock and release(can't remember the exact term)
I prefer the pinch technique with keeping my middle finger and ring finger along the string.
