question about using petri dishes

I just poured 20 plastic petri dishes with agar in front of my flow hood using the technique outlined in R.R's video. I have done this 4 separate times now and had no problems so far. I have always used the plates immediately after they cooled. My question is, if I leave a sterilized unopened petri dish sitting there without any para-film around it, and don't bump the lid obviously, will it contaminate? I don't really understand how much air gets under the lid when it is just sitting there. I am wondering if I can save the plates to use later since I never know when I might need some ready to go. There are some interesting things coming up in my yard. Namely Pan Sub. Would most people put para-film on the un-inoculated plates and then remove it when you need to use them? Thx:)

I've had pre-sterilized unopened petri dishes contaminate within a week without any protection such as parafilm or a ziplock bag.

If you are wanting to store plates long term to where you can just grab one and use it, put it in a ziploc bag in the fridge.
You can store them at room temp for a week or two, but I wouldnt wait any longer. Put them in the fridge in a bag they can be in there for many months, as long as a year probably.
I usually let them sit at room temp for 24 hours after taking them out of the fridge though.

Yeah, no fridge. Room temp is fine for long term storage.
Saran wrap is by far the cheapest method of wrapping individual dishes and then put them into 4 or 5 packs inside Ziploc bags. Its just a simple redundancy protection. Once by individual wrapping and once by the Ziploc bag.
Also, buy sleeves by the case. You will go through them, and that is the cheapest way to buy them.

After my poured dishes cool down for a while if I'm not going to use some right away I put them back in the sleeve they came in and impulse seal it. The sleeve is sterile, once the sleeve is opened in front of the flowhood it stays in the flow until resealed.

Thx! this is all great info. Yea the fridge is so nasty, unless im gonna buy a brand new one im wary of it, although I do have my master culture slants in there but triple ziploc bagged. Its funny though because ziplocs leak a lot of air, and always worry me that way. I bought 1000 petri dishes last time, so that should last me a long time:). I love the idea of impulse sealing the sleeves. I never thought of that. Thx a bunch for your thoughts. It occured to me last night that parafilm is not the thing to do because it will loose moisture over time, and you probably dont need air exchange if nothing is growing on it.

Room temp isn't fine for long term storage. I don't know why you wouldn't just put em in the fridge anyway

Why? Please explain.
If it's sterile and neatly wrapped, it won't contam, lose moisture, or anything else... Maybe after 4 months it might dry out, but I go through 40 dishes in weeks so it doesn't matter.

you don't have to wrap poured dishes that you're not using right away, the sleeve the dishes came in, yea it's the perfect size and the inside is sterile. just put them back in the damn bag and then twist the end of it. put the whole bag of plates in the fridge or you don't even have to do that, out of the fridge they'll last months unless you have time sensitive or temperature sensitive media for instance lin's wild yeast media should be used a few days after adding cresyl violet. just using MEA or YPD or PDA plates though you can leave them weeks if not months.
