SGFC spec
    #21966606 - 07/19/15 06:45 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Trying to get my SGFC to spec.
Q 1: Do the holes in the SGFC have to extend right down towards the very bottom of each side, -I mean, under where the perlite is going to sit? I drilled holes into every side, including the top, but I stopped drilling about an inch into where the top of the perlite level would be. Do I have to go all the way down? How important is that?

Q 2. Why put the cakes on tin foil in the SGFC, which makes them unstable and can easily fall over. Why tin foil? Or could it be another suitable medium? And is it better to raise the cakes altogether off the perlite using some specific technique?

Q 3. Is distilled water necessary for the dunking and the perlite?

1. yes they're the most important.. air has to go thru the perlite.

2. it doesn't make them unstable.. and the cakes will colonize into the perlite and that's no good. cakes also will get waterlogged.

3. no distilled water is only for spore syringes, humidifiers, some agar recipes, and lead acid batteries.

Why put the cakes on tin foil in the SGFC
so the mycelium doesn't grow into the perlite and make the cakes waterlogged it's also an energy expenditure that's not helping grow mushrooms.

Ok. That much I get. My question was really does it have to be tin foil? Is there some reason for that? Dunno, reflecting light, or what? Any time I inspected a cake for pins on previous occasions, if I so much as turned the cake a little, it would list or even fall over, losing verm onto the perlite unnecessarily. If the material itself is of no consequence, I was thinking of using jar lids or cutting up round soft plastic DVD covers, I have millions of them and resting them on that for stability. Thoughts?
