San Pedro cutting question
    #21966335 - 07/19/15 05:37 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I'm wondering what I should do with this column coming off my main San Pedro.

I was planning on cutting it off and transplanting it to a new pot. It's a little over 9 in, so I would probably leave about 6 in. above the soil.

My question is should I do anything to the bottom 3 in. to ensure that the root system doesn't grow out too long in the pot?

Also, should I cut off a half inch or so from the main column so more branches can develop?

Total cactus noob here so bear with me, all input is much appreciated.

After you cut it off let the fresh cut heal for a week or too. Pups don't usually have much exposed fresh skin so it shouldn't take that long.

More pups should emerge in time so you don't need to cut off an inch unless you want to I guess. As for the bottom 3" of your pup, you shouldn't have to do anything.. At least I don't.

that's a really cool looking planter that the mother plant is in. I would leave the grow tip intact on your pup. Let it root, and start growing taller, and then you can top it when you have another 6 inches of growth.

Thanks!

The reason why I want to cut a little off the top of my main cactus is that it had several pups develop in the middle of winter that I cut out, so it seems like there aren't many spots for new pups to grow.
