The fruits look fine, just really PE like. They either get fat or end up looking like that. I looks like they got all the FAE they wanted.
Bill, use more spawn with your PE, you won't be let down. The casing layer looks really wet in the humidity dome also. I would allow the mycelium just a bit longer to colonize it.

This is when I like to stick my PE tubs into fruiting, Azur and others eyeball 30% colonization. I think it is ok as long as it looks like it will finish colonizing by the time knots pop up.

Yeah, didn't realize they were PE. My bad. Never grown that strain, so their true identity was unappreciated by me. I know they're potent, but to me they just don't look aesthetically pleasing.

I don't understand why I should use more spawn because I used 1 full quart and a bunch of bulk and filled it basically, took about 8 days to colonize then I let it consolidate for about 8 more days. So I don't get what more spawn accomplish? wouldn't it just waste myc?
but you hit the nail on the head with the wet casing..i have a bad habit of over-watering the casing/top. I don't drench it, but still, I do overdo it.
but yeah, as they were growing the stems didn't have any myc crawling up them or anything so I assumed the FAE was efficient enough. Before I cut the holes and used polyfil I was having FAE problems because the only holes were the ones at the top.

The ratio you hit is more important. If your doing somewhere between 1:1 and 1:2 you're fine. But no matter what, more spawn usually translates into more fruits so if you're not seeing 1 oz dry per quart of grain used, you're wasting time materials and fruiting space.

but whats the difference using a 1:1 or 1:2 or 1:3 and even 1:4 ??
I thought the ONLY difference is the amount of time it takes to colonize the tray. I was under the impression that was the ONLY difference.
this is news to me, boy.

I use crazy ratio's for all my tubs. up to 5-6 half gallons + 1qt is where I stop usually.

This one I used 11. it is 2 days into colonization.
There is a diminishing returns factor here for sure though. I don't plan to get more mushrooms using 11 over 6-7, I just did not want the KSSS anymore.
The thickness of the substrate will have little to do with mushroom size also. Since we are discussing things in this thread

1 oz per quart used has been a standard as long as I have been here. Yes higher spawn ratios colonize faster. They also deliver higher yield (as long as enough water is supplied) and more flushes.
If its news to you its about time you climb out from under the rock and start reading some relevant information.

hey bill,
check it out. i found this old thread floating on the omc that had some grows with the flats. these are ban thurian.
in this trial from 2007. there were no polyfil holes. the tub top was lifted twice daily. its a fun way to grow for personal. these were not cased. eventually i began filling the subs and casing up to the very top of the flat. in these images they were only about 3/4th full. to maximize yield use more spawn and fill the flat all the way up.

Wow what a snarky remark. Nice to know ive been under a rock because i thought invthe end mycelium was mycelium..regardless of ratio that was used. Sorry oh mr elitist mushroom grower..

Mycelium is only mycelium as long as you call it mycelium bill, should you chose to call it something else it will turn into that, trust me try it Dude, 4 years of living and you havent picked up on the fact that living organisms need nutrients?
