Making Reishi Extract for the first time

I'm making an extract for a family member with cancer. I powdered 250 grams, and am boiling it right now. After that i will freeze it to further break the cell walls. Because ethanol is expensive here (and i'm not distilling yet), i'm thinking about making a concentrated extract with methanol, then letting it be absorped by some ground reishi or plant material, and then let the alcohol evaporate. Just like you make chaga with dmt. I will then put it in capsules.
For the hot water extract, i'm thinking also to make it concentrated, and make icecubes, to add to thee or coffee. Or anyone has a good idea to mask the taste?
I'm thinking about making dosages of 5 grams of reishi for each day.
I'm also thinking of making extracts of maiktake and cordiceps mycelium, but am a bit put off by the thought that with mycelium you can miss a contam and then maybe extract soemthing harmfull (though maybe that risk is not more harmfull than the disease )
And i found this article, do you think it would be beneficial to add Vit C to the alcohol soak? ( http://www.canited.com/cancer.htm )
Another question: often with waterextractions, you lower the pH. Does anyone know if that is beneficial here?

i just measured the pH of the extract where i didn't add anything (i did use tapwater of about pH 8), it was around pH 5. I'm making a second one with lemonjuice added. I have a hard time finding what pH would be good for the extraction. Some researcharticles extract at different pH's from the same material to get different polysachharrides

I wish someone who has their legs in this department would chime in. This would certainly be a good thread!!

Not sure about the specifics of how pH relates to extractions or polysaccharides but foods are generally deemed "potentially hazardous" when the pH is above 4.5 or something near that.
Foods with lower pH are considered "safe" and don't need refrigeration for preservation. Water activity is also used as a measurement of food safety.
But it does make sense that different pH levels can result in different polysaccharides due to what can and can't thrive in an acidic or nonacidic environment.

...thrive? it's about dead matter having molecules that are soluble at different pH's
And i was planning to either mix it with alcohol or freeze it in icecubes, so pH for preservation is not an issue. But thanks for responding.

I made two hot water extracts, one with lemonjuice and one without, froze them in icecubes, and am taking one from each every day. My dad is taking two of both daily for the cancer. I suspected to feel nothing from it or some more energy like some people report, but actually it made me way more calm and balanced. I always have a lot of tension and extreme moodswings, anger and such, i always use kratom, opiates or other stuff to regulate my emotions and energy. But now i'm seriously concidering quitting those stuff and see how it goes as i don't feel that it's necessary anymore. Actually my girl and I broke up a few weeks ago, also because of my temperament. And now my biochemistry finally seems to be working ''normal'', wish that happened half a year ago before we broke up.

Hey Forrest,
Sorry to hear about the break up. I can totally relate to the whole situation and emotional state. In my experience the things that really help my temperament/anger the most was eliminating all opiates followed by my small nicotine addiction. Also, I really limited my caffeine consumption - seems to have worked wonders. I think you are going down the right path and mentality towards dealing with your current emotional issues and I wish you the best in that endeavour.

Now I am also headed down the mushroom extract road. I hope to learn from your experiences. I have decided to do half filled quart jars with grain in vitro to dry both the mycelium/fruit bodies and the spores and metabolites to powder and encapsulate. I'm on my first ever reishi grow right now and I couldn't be more excited! Can't wait to get this into my diet and my families. That is such a beautiful thing you are doing for your father, are you considering other medicinal mushies as well?
For the methanol extraction I would recommend trying to dry out the extract in a shallow pyrex dish until down to a near paste and then from there you can use a light heat to get it down to a more powdery consistency.
