just remove the rattlesnake population, from a grass roots level...fundraiser's, charity's, and then go on a snake whacking expedition.

Depends on the species, severity of bite, and his body's reaction to both the bite and treatment.  The price you quoted could very well include hand produced antivenom delivered by helicopter, on call..

I'm sure all those costs really are ridiculously inflated like that, but he must have go some decently extensive treatment for complications from that bite too. I saw a hospital bill for a drug saying it cost $16000, and they said that was the best price they could give. I looked it up and pretty much every major pharmacy charged about $2000 for it. This is why I let my medical bills go to collections. They're lying thieving extortionists and they get more than enough money from my insurance.

If had insurance, the bill probably would've been 1/10th of that or less. Hospitals charge ridiculous prices to patients when billed directly, but through insurance they charge more reasonable prices. When my wife got hit by a car we were looking at 100k in medical bills, finally our lawyer got the insurance company to pay up and the hospital settled for less than 10k I believe.

It's not that we don't have affordable healthcare, it's that hospitals are allowed to charge fucking ridiculous prices to patients in order to compensate for those they treat that can't/won't pay. Walk into an ER with no money and no insurance and you'll still be treated and billed. If you don't pay all that really happens is you get harassed by debt collectors and your credit rating takes a hit.

Insurance companies are more than likely o blame for these absurd medical expenses.... I hate the health care in this country... You can literally fly to france get the health care, live there for two years, and fly back for less than what this dude paid.

Insurance companies and hospitals are both to blame. Did you ever notice how much bullshit paperwork is involved with insurance. They do the same thing to hospitals so the hospitals have to hire more people to manage the paper work , and then the hospitals increase healthcare costs to cover the extra staff. And since health care costs go up, more people buy insurance... and EVERYBODY WINS.

Well let's not get too jumpy, these snake bites can fall into pretty specific avenues.. this isnt your average broken wrist..

When you talk about 30-40 vials, this shit gets pretty big deal, especially when you fly half way across the country by helicopter, on call..

Let's not take the extreme case, Asante.. and apply it to all other cases as the norm..

Yeah, i guess for a snake bite that's a bit of a stretch. Theres a plethora of other instances where that would hold true though, major surgeries included

insurance companies have been jacking up their prices but the doctors and
hospitals have as well, all of this was due to obamacare, the insurance
companies have done it because the bill eliminated a lot of competition
and because they now are forced to cover preexisting conditions so now
instead of someone with diabetes paying a higher premium we all pay a
higher premium that almost matched what they were paying preior to the
bill's passage

my $32k bill was without insurance, I had it only 8 months earlier but
had to drop it because I could no longer afford the premiums since they
more than doubled, under obamacare marketplace they were triple and only
covered me where my prior insurance covered myself and the kids

What sucks is people without insurance pay a lot and insurance companies pay a little for the same service. My sinus surgery would have cost me $30,000 without insurance, but the insurance company payed less than $12,000.

Hate to burst your bubble guys, but insurance companies have been charging this much to uninsured people for decades. I've known lots of people before Obamacare who had medical stuff done while uninsured. Their bills always looked like this.

Well in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jim, albeit a big dude, gets bitten by a rattlesnake and lives by eating the snake and resting for a day and a half. I would try that first and probably die before going to a hospital.

Unlike gun control which effects me because guns get smuggled into Canada I don't care at all about other nations health care systems.
Since having a stroke I can't find anyone who will sell me health insurance for trips to USA/Mexico so I just go anyway and hope I don't get sick. I don't pose for selfies with snakes or gators though.

imagine that. get taken to hospital almost dying of a snake bite. wake up 5 days later with a $150,000 hospital bill. now that is some bullshit.

i think i'm going to get into the hospital game in america though. 150k for 4-5 days seems like a pretty solid margin to myself

from what you're saying though this obamacare system sounds pretty ass backwards.

i.e. the uninsured, usually low income families who can't afford insurance, get charged more...? That does not make sense to myself at all

i'm gonna take a long shot here and say that Obama wanted to get ahead of some sort of "curve" and said that this plan would be difficult to settle into but that it'd pay off in the long run.

It can't be explained. No one read it when they voted for it, and no one has read it since.

I'm not even going to say :haha: to you americans, I feel deeply sorry for the way your country's health system operates. When I was living in the UK I once overdosed on drugs and sustained physical injury. I woke up in the hospital, all taken care off, they even took me to a special unit to chill for 10 days with free food, entertainment and free drugs for a month afterwards. They didn't ask me to pay a single penny.

I love the NHS.

I'm not a UK person, I just lived there for a few years. I do have an AK-47 tho but I rarely use it. Now back to UK, I feel that having access to free health care is somewhat more up my alley than having a gun.

By affordable you mean making somebody else pay the bill?  I agree that the bill is ridiculous but the hospitals do that nonsense in order to cover for the bums who get care and don't pay.  These can always be negotiated down.

resulted a $32,000 in medical bills for my daughter's broken arm, a bill that

No he means reducing the vast power of the medical industry within your borders and everybody sharing the load of everybody.
This will result in a rattlesnake bite just being deadly, instead of capable of ruining you financially.

I'm pretty damn sure that the average Canadian pays a shittton less  for medical expenses than the average American.

The average citizen ends up needing several surgeries and hospitalizations in a lifetime.

Solidarity, not "I'm healthy and those who are not get not a cent from me" while medical expenses go through the roof for simple procedures.

6 years ago to get a broken arm set and casted the cost was around $3000, my
daughter broke her wrist, it wasnt a compound fracture so there wasnt any
surgery or any of that shit to deal with and even if there was it still would
have been around $16,000. in fact "decades ago", a person would go to a hospital

you didnt read the bill though did you, I did. I knew we were getting fucked
because it wasnt universal healthcare, I'd said it thousands of times that it
was a tax scheme to tax insurance and fine the uninsured, I told people it was
going to cause more people to become uninsured so now instead of 45 million
uninsured in america we have 70 million that are uninsured and everyone is being
taxed or fined because we cant afford insurance now that obamacare is in place

these are the people you encouraged the US public to trust when you made the
same assumptions based on what they had told you, that it would be universal
healthcare but for some crazy reason, foriegners dont read the bills being
introduced in congress, they dont look into our politicians, they simply weigh
in on our political system as if they have a fucking clue. most dont even know
what's going on in their own country

what? I guess you are far more clueless than even you believe, the bill passed
without a single republican vote, republicans voted against it, how exactly could
the republicans fuck it up when they werent even involved in the creation of the
bill that went from 600 pages to more than 3000 pages while sitting in committee
in the democrat controlled senate before going to the democrat controlled house
and then to the democrat controlled executive office

You think its a conspiracy theory that the lobby groups OWN American politics? That the big corporations, which by their nature are profit oriented sociopathic constructs don't OWN all politics in America and Europe?

Think again.

The people will get to elect which guy will bring them the bad news.

You're LESS fucked if you anticipate proactively.

Work towards getting out of debt and having a bit of a wealth reserve, of which a portion in cash in your home in case the system breaks down and you can't withdraw money for a few weeks.

Have at least a months worth of food, drink & whatever it takes to run a household, including camping stove to cook on and toilet paper.

If you use banks at all, only for payments, NEVER for savings, instead invest your savings. If you use them at al, be EXTREMELY strategic with credit cards and try to avoid debt creation in any way.

Particularly in the US, obtain a weapon you can carry concealed and become proficient in its use.

In a friendly non alarmist non nutty way guide your family and friends to do the same so that you build a network, a network you can rely on if you need something and who can rely on you if they need something.

Stuff like that. Stuff that doesnt hurt if you do it, but rather than breed fear, creates security and some independence.

i don't mind obama care, it has allowed my x who was in need of a surgery but would not be approved for insurance due to pre existing conditions to be covered and get the surgery he needed.

yes his premiums are 800$+ a month but that beats the 5 years waiting he did in discomfort previously.

the issue with health care in america is it is for profit, it should be for care and wellness not to turn people into dollars.

This is sound advice, I would advise people take these suggestions.

Plus, get a solar system going, even if it is only enough for basic needs.

There is no free health care.  Even if you make doctors and nurses slaves you still have to feed them and house them and clothe them.  Maybe not the hot nurses.

Bureaucracy has made our health system expensive.  In Europe those costs are hidden in government agencies.  If we just paid directly it would be cheaper.  Every doctors office has at least one person dedicated to filing paperwork but at least we don't have to wait several months for surgery.

the only lobby groups that 'own' american politics are the ones you oppose hence
the reason the anti-GMO crowd claims Monsanto owns the politicians and the anti

Warren Buffett and George Soros are the same as the  Koch Brothers, Green Peace

and the Anti GMO Project are the same as Monsanto and Sygenta, for some reason,
the lefties dont want to see that their lobbiests and doners are just as wealthy

A problem with solar energy is that if the SHTF  :shitfan:  then your whole neighborhood can see that you got something they want.. solar panels.

Solar panels may make a target of your home if you one of the very few.

Umm the government subsidizes the greentards.  We need fusion.  Electric utilities are actually subsidizing solar by buying excess electricity.  Here in the northeast it is pretty unfeasible

The main problem isn't that healthcare is for profit the problem is that the insurance system is for profit.

However, people who think that healthcare responds to normal market forces are delusional. Normal market forces only apply when both parties are free to exit the marketplace. When you are sick or dying you aren't in a position to "shop for a good price" and wait until there's a better price. Who fucking price shops when they are bleeding out. These market based
Solutions that conservatives think will bring prices down are immoral because they don't work. Any idiot knows this. Healthcare costs should be regulated by the government. If you don't care to be paid a fair price you don't have to run a hospital or be a doctor.

It's obvious there's no normal market forces because hospitals don't even advertise pricing. That never happens in anything that even remotely resembles a free market.

I'm skeptical about the fusion thing. There are certainly more feasible way to produce energy on different scales. Wind turbines, hydroelectric and geothermal power, Maybe even solar power for larger scale stuff, and we're getting better at synthesizing liquid hydrocarbon fuels for smaller scale stuff. The only problem is that none of that stuff is cost effective compared to oil, but that won't be a problem for long. Practically useful fusion power doesn't even exist yet (unless you count solar power), and it may never be practical.

Not really. Maybe 50 square ft. Idk kinda hard to judge. But, the electricity required to recharge an electric vehicle is barely noticeable in an electric bill. Maybe $10 a month. The major cost is A/C and of course that is going to coincide with when the solar panels are providing the most juice. I wouldn't be surprised if he saves $100 a month in summer.

No. Why would the government bail out a newspaper?

He's got you there, Koods.
A government would totally bail out a newspaper if that newspaper happened to write in a certain way, you know?
Not saying that happened, but...

So anyway, Asante, how about them insurance companies going for a power grab here? Pretty concerning, right?

Did anything come of this? Those articles are five years old.

I do guess certain people do get exceptions to the rules like when a foreigner name Ruoert Murdoch was allowed to keep part of his American media empire despite breaking US law.

Did anything come of what the FCC was debating? Nothing in the articles said they actually took any action beyond discussion.

That's exactly what they were talking about. Changing rules. You think the FCC hands out money to media organizations

And once again, we have those three opinion pieces from right leaning publications using a hot button word like "bailout" to get their reader fired up. You conservatives have no idea how easy you are to manipulate.

it's conspiracy drivel

This is some seriously delusional ignorance of the way our government works.

The anti-GMO crowd is the same as Monsanto?  Ya, that's totally why we have GMO labelling on a national sca...., oops my bad.

We don't.

Also, ever heard of the  Rockefellers'?

Not only do they own our government, they've been attempting to dismantle it peicemeal.  They have so many political action committees under their thumb its a joke.

And you bring up George Soros and the Koch brothers, those guys are two bit players, a distraction from the man behind the curtain.
