Hu
    #21961109 - 07/18/15 03:43 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I went to an Art Fair thursday and I ran into these folks: http://www.eckankar.org/. They taught me about Hu, which they told me is an ancient name for God. They sing this name as a love song to God and it fills them with joy and bliss. I tried it and it seemed to work really well for me, so from now on I am going to try singing it for 20 minutes a day. They also have meetups each week where you can come together with other folks and sing to God. I am going to go next week.

Anyone know anything about this? Their whole philosophy is built around connecting with the light and sound of God. It is for people of any religion.

Is Eckankar still in existence? Wow! They were yet another cult of the 1970s. The sound "Hu" may be derivative of the Sufi practice of chanting Allah Hu in conjunction with Dhikir - a rotation of the head in a particular way that incorporates the Sufi chakra model (called Lataif). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah_Hoo

Yeah I did more research on them and found out they were a cult. I am no longer interested in them as an organization but do you think there is validity in the practice?

Well, I have osteoarthritis in my C6 and C7 vertebrae, in addition to which I get motion sick. So Dhikir is not for me. Additionally, it is a Sufi practice which really requires at least some knowledge and appreciation of Arabic and Islam. As for Eckankar, the name always reminded me of a Kundalini Yoga mantra of Yogi Bhajan, which is: Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru. Eckankar pretended an ancient origin, but seems to me it borrowed from at least Sufi and 3HO Kundalini Yoga sources.

Yeah I read about that while I was researching it. Seems based on lies and deceptions, not a group I want to associate myself with. It seemed innocent enough at the fair but this is why I always research any new cults I think about joining.
