Anyone here ever build one? I've been toying with the Idea for a while I'd like to build one that runs off compressed air that will lauch 20 oz soda bottles maybe 300 yards.

The cans may deform from the sudden pressure and jam in the barrel.

I made a 2" barrel sealing pneumatic piston valve cannon that shoots golf balls piloted by a 1" sprinkler valve. Definitely the strongest cannon I've built thus far. Next project is a all metal piston valve cannon to give me piece of mind. I'm terrified its gonna shatter and really fuck me up even though its pressure rated PVC.

Yeah we used to make these when I was in high school. The best one had a 4" diameter chamber and I think 3' x 1 1/4" barrel, and a spark plug hooked up to a piezo element from a barbecue lighter. I think the pipes/fittings were ABS plastic, whatever the black pipes are. We used quick start (petroleum ether) as the fuel.

I made one from Lowes parts. It measured at 8' long and would have been lethal up to about 50 yards. If memory serves me it cost about $18 minus the grill igniter, glue and potatos.

So far this is pretty much the Idea I have in mind 3" scedule 80 or scedule 120 for the barell and chamber run of a tank with about 150 psi the tricky part is gonna be the Valve so it releases at a fast enough rate and the tank size I figure I'd have to reduce down from at least 6" to 4" to the 3" to get enough barell pressure.

for best effect a fast exhaust solenoid is what you want, they're also known as quick dump valves, you can get away with a 1/4 turn ball valve but you'l lose accuracy

iVe made one out of ABS pipe (dont use PVC, They leak).
It was an internal combustion type, used MAPP gas, two screws and a piezo-electric BBQ lighter.
Worked great, most the time. Tricky getting the gas/air mix right.
I had the design down perfect. Looked and felt like a rocket launcher.
Was a lot of fun to use.
Havent made one in a while, time to make one.

Pretty sure abs isn't as strong as PVC

When PVC fails, it leaks or splits.
When ABS fails, it explodes with shrapnel.

ABS glue holds while PVC glue leaks easily.
PVC pipe maybe stronger but ABS glue is far better.
Never had one explosion.
