College Major Dilemma
    #21958167 - 07/17/15 09:19 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So I'm going to college this fall, and its still totally up in the air as to what I'm going to major in. I chose business as my major, and Know that I can change it whenever need be (within the next year or 2).

I mainly chose business just to be safe. I know I'll get a decent paying job, after coming out of College with a major in Business administration. I wouldn't totally hate a business job if the hours were OK and the pay was fair, I just wouldn't really enjoy it.

I really enjoy Science, mainly biology and astronomy, and it can be really fun working through laboratory experiments with teams. However I just don't think I'll be able to find a job in a science field, that doesn't involve engineering or physics or robotics, all of which are big deal breakers for me (I'm not good enough at math/applying concepts for those careers); and so I'm going the safe route and choosing business.

Now heres my Dilemma: I know that you can switch majors within your first year, sometimes even 2 years at college. People say that "Oh don't worry, in your first two years you're learning the exact same things kids in other Majors are learning."
Sadly I found out that this isn't true at all. At orientation I found out, that generally, kids with business majors, have completely different classes than kids who have say, a communications, or science major (except for maybe history and english).
I really don't want to take 2 years of business classes, only to find out that I want to be an astrology major, and have to spend thousands more, just to get my degree! Or Vice Versa!

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.

I've noticed that a lot of people do exactly what you're doing, start with a business major and figure it out later.

The greater majority of those kids end up hating business and switching anyway. I would just take general math and writing courses until I figured it out if I were you.

Well my sister got her BS in Astronomy with a minor in physics, and it helped her get an awesome 90k a year job in business.  Although last time I saw her she said she wished she'd gotten her degree in business.  She'd probably be making even more money now.  She probably realized she couldn't switch majors and graduate at the same time.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do and got my degree in music.  Loved my career, and was glad I followed my dream.  but then I got sick of it.  Then I decided to change my career, and am back in school now, again knowing exactly what I am going for.

I hope you figure it out, good luck

I finished college last spring (in your state at a SUNY) and switched my major twice Freshman year, and almost did it several more times before I found this out:

It's not as important WHAT you study, but HOW you study.

If you bust your ass and get the things done that you need to get done, these skills transfer to whatever you do in life.

I landed an awesome job after college because I showed up at Headquarters (which was in another country) after I applied and showed them I was serious about working for them.

Now, admittedly, to a certain extent, certain majors open up certain doorways that would otherwise not be accessible, so I guess think about this:

What change do you want to make in the world? What condition do you want to leave this earth in for your future generations? What major would leave the most doors open for you to do this?

If I were you, I'd go in "Undeclared" and take a bunch of classes that interest me. Then either, create my own major (I know tons of people who have done it), or find the one that suits me best.

Whatever you do man, don't worry too much about it. A lot of people don't stay in the field then got their undergrad in anyway. Focus on learning as much as you can in whatever interest you. I hope this helps.

You will find a job much easier with any scientific degree than with just business. Youre pretty even with a degree in english at that point. If youre going that route, major in accounting or economics.

If youre unsure, a good place to start is math. Both fields will require math. Here's the safety net - any business/economic/accounting graduate with upper division math will be leaps above the average in the application pool. Should you choose to change your major to any scientific degree, math is usually the long pole in the tent. If youve been taking math the whole time, you wont need to catch up. This will save you years/thousands of dollars in tuition. Calculus I and II are common prerequisites to any upper division science course. Just get it out of the way asap.

While it is somewhat true that business majors dont take the same classes as everybody, this is not true for generals. Every degree will usually require the same generals (or your choice of the common available generals). These are your courses in diversity, humanities, english, life sciences, social sciences, etc. These are requirements you will not be able to escape with any major. I recommend just starting there for a year or two while you get a feel for things. My girlfriend was a marketing major and changed it her senior year . Sometimes changing your major will require years of catch-up, but if you cover your bases along the way, changing your major down the road shouldnt be a problem.

Im currently doing a 4yr degree in science.

Id say follow your passion.

Success really depends on your effort here. I started volunteering in a research lab at school (asked the first professor who I thought did interesting research, I had never even taken a class with him), as my luck would have it, he believes in the underdog and despite my less than stellar GPA he gave me a chance.

Now I am in my second payed work contract with him, have a super interesting project that I have a lot of control over (I have 2 people supervising it and we meet regularly to talk about my progress and the next steps), and I will probably get my name on a paper or two.

This was a good choice for me because I want to do research and have inner values that put money secondary to passion.

I was sent to a conference a few weeks ago where there were many industry people and one person who had graduated from my lab a few years ago did a talk and was offered a job on the spot. There are jobs out there.

Your choice really depends on your desire for money and your passions. There are always people who will tell you that there are no jobs in that field or that there are so few jobs and that you will fail. My opinion is that its worth it to take the risk in an un-guaranteed field only if you intend on pouring yourself into it fully, making it your life, and taking it as far as you can.

They teach astrology at universities now?

I had a similar dilemma. I started out as an exercise and sports science major, and although I like that subject, I hated the way they taught it and I didn't like the types of examinations, so after one semester I switched to Philosophy, which is what i loved all along. It's not the best thing for getting a job, but I learnt more than I could have from any other degree, I loved my time spent in class, and the only regret I have is not choosing philosophy sooner. Pick what you love doing man, if you're passionate enough then you'll find a way to make it work in your life.

What about biology? Medical science? Psychology? Neuroscience or other cognitive sciences?

Geology and sub-specialties within the geosciences are marketable science degrees. It is what I am pursuing - although industry is in a downturn right now.

A science with a defined sector is often marketable. My father has a degree in "natural resource science" and is a fish biologist. He's got an absolutely amazing job - great wage, flexible atmosphere, cool projects and near complete autonomy.

I recommend doing some more research - Reddit has been a good place for me to probe deeper into specific industries (mining, engineering, petroleum geology, etc....)

I'm sure a lot of schools do this but as you are pursuing a SUNY school as I did, think about this:

GET INVOLVED. Clubs, organizations, etc. Most of the learning I did was outside of the classroom in these groups. Everyone pays tuition which goes towards a budget for the clubs and organization, yet most students simply party or whatever on weekends and don't utilize this budget. So, friends and I created an Outing club which let us use to budget to fund rock climbing and snowboarding trips. Got school vans, money for gas and food, lift tickets, etc. Don't hesitate to work within the infrastructure to pursue things that interest you.
