Yeah you are right. I also found these growing in a clump of leaves at the base of an oak tree. They are pretty dry already, rusty orange caps measuring 4 cm in diameter. Thin orange stems, and silky orange gills. Any ideas on what these may be?

I would compare Tylopilus balloui for your first one and Lactarius species for your second. They look to dry to exude any liquid, so it would be had to put a species name on it

Don't feel bad, every positive ID is just a new species that you can add to your mental catalog. Get familiar with as many species as you can, and one day you'll hit on an active, and then THAT will be in your catalog. I've been hunting rare Colorado actives for nine years now, and hopefully this will be the year that I finally get a haul that's worth mentioning. Boletes have been tricking active hunters for years now, one of the basic rules of thumb that every beginning active hunter learns is to ignore any mushroom with pores instead of gills (unless you're hunting porcini that is ). Some of the boletes stain/bruise blue like active species, hence the confusion.

My Italian tour is already arranged for next spring & I'm going to do the whole goddamn trip wearing a bright red field marshal's uniform & accompanied by six speed-freak bodyguards bristling with Mace bombs & when I start talking about American writers & the name Tom Wolfe comes up, by god, you're going to wish you were born a fucking iguana!" - Hunter S. Thompson, 03/03/71 Letter to Tom Wolfe.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I found my weekend nature walks were even better when I slowed down and started to understand the local ecosystem. Fungi are something special. Even found a micology group in my area that organizes forages in the hill country. Excited to learn from the pros.
