Peyote Garden
    #2195646 - 12/22/03 02:29 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Here is my small but growing garden, its filled with lophs grafted onto myrtillocactus and stenocereus, and has some small trich. spachianus and panachoi as well. Its currently under a 125w compact flourescent, 2700k, and I also have a 6500k 125w bulb I will switch it with to get a nice variety of spectrums. These are going to be for sacramental religious use, as I am a member of the Peyote Way Religion.

Here is the mother plant, a beautiful caespitosa.

its at www.Peyoteway.org, and its doesnt matter what race you are. No branches, just the main church, and you can even go visit and go for a spirit walk and eat peyote if your a member.

Actually after reading the Peyote way website all the way through it seems there are only 5 states that honor the Peyote Way at all, and the US Supremem Court only honors the Peyote Way if one has at least 25 percent Amindian blood. So it's not just free and easy but there are strictures. I wouldn't go bragging about legal immunity to your trafic controller when you get caught weaving on the road.

Ya nothing is guaranteed, but I think if it ever came down to it, in the supreme court, they would rule for religious freedom just like they did for that case involving Ayahuasca. It is just in case worse comes to worse, a backup plan. Like Martin L King Junior said once, Its your moral duty to not follow unjust laws or something like that.

it is legal about everwhere besides the us, but I got mine imported, its all about finding a good source. Customs can't detect it because it has no noticeable odor and its very small.

Yea i've seen a few european vendors that will sell them to you in the U.S. if you can send validation of you being in the native american church, which i'm sure anyone can get from joining the peyote way church correct?

The mother is about 7 years old.  All the grafts were done this summer from the mother, with the exception of one that was a normal 2.0cm button grafted.

It would take like 10 years in the wild, but I would say 5-7 years could get you decent sized buttons from seed.  Grafted buttons should reach maturity in about 1-2 years, and have plenty of pups that would be big enough to eat by the third year.

Here is what I expect most of the grafts to look like in a  few years...

Merry Christmas!

I'm very new with cactus cultivation, but 7 years must take alot of patience.. Is it realy worth waiting that long?

From time of cultivation till the time I'll that I'll eat this will be about 2-3 years, the one is 7 years old but I got it imported during summer. Its definitely gonna be worth it to me, and I will usually just eat a few buttons with a dose of peruvian torch/pedro to get the most out of it.

If you like growing and collecting cacti. Yes. If you're just going to eat them get some San Pedros.

Some of the european sites say they take 15 to 20 years to be able to produce a good button.. I could understand waiting 4 or 5 but 20 is a bit much.. I ordered alot of pedro seeds to start growing and if it goes well then we will see what comes next  Then again I still don't know much about the cultivation of Cacti yet it seems interesting enough to give it a try. We had some san pedro's once but after eating an inch raw we couldn't take it anymore.. Next time were gonna try some preperation methods, while in the mean time we'll be growing some ourselves.

Twenty years in a cactus in an investment of the heart. A Loph grown from seed is a companion, not a vegetable. Even one propagated from a cutting on it's own roots is a signifigant investment.
If you don;t have the desire to keep such a plant for so long, by all means graft, of simply opt for a faster growing teacher such as a Trichocereus species.
