Does size matter??? heh heh
    #21956385 - 07/17/15 02:14 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I can't remember which post it was or who said it but someone said that when it comes to crumbling a cake for a bulk, smaller is better...they suggested using a cheese grater to crumble the cakes... opinions?

Just put it in your hands and crumble it to the size of a pea or so. A cheese grater is a bit excessive if you ask me but I guess to each their own.

The more you crush and beat on it the longer it will take to recover but once it does it will have tins of surface area to spread. Some people even blend mycelium into a slurry for this reason.

You're talking about something completely different. You're talking about liquid inoculant.

OP, you would look like a damn fool using a cheese grater. Who the hell even came up with that?
Breaking up spawn with your hands is what everyone does. If you have the strength to open a gallon of milk, you should be fine crumbling up some spawn

Umm cheese graters work great, cron used them when he spawned cakes. Also spawning with slurry to bulk works good. Eat did it lots and even slurried grains, though slurried grains in open air was a lot riskier. Get the cakes as small as possible for a faster spawn run.

yes a cheese grater is the best way to spread out the inoc points.
dont dunk your cake before grating it, it only makes the job harder.

you could slurry it too, just add some water and the cakes in a blender you've somewhat cleaned out
and mix the slurry into bulk sub.

my tip, cakes are already 2/3's verm so I wouldn't use more than 1qt verm pr brick of coir. this makes ca 8 qt's substrate.

Yeah man. Pretty sure everyone uses a cheese grater these days lol or a blender for slurrys. If I did cakes I would use a grater, but grains are just easier.

I'm surprised anyone still owns a cheese grater in this age of pre-grated cheese

Lol don't they sell whole cheese in your country? Cheese graters are never going to become old, as well as spoons, forks, knifes and many other helpful domestic items.

The fuck? lol I have like 3 different cheese graters..

And cheese graters are best because it makes many inoculation points while leaving healthy undisturbed mycelium in every grated piece.
Crumbling cakes leaves bigger pieces and often they are disturbed by pressure, from being squeezed hard enough to crumble.

I bought a cheese grater just for this hobby...used it 3 times...switched to WBS...lol:shrug:
It worked great BTW...much easier than beating up the poor mycelium in a ziplock

Someone with 18 posts saying that....:ilold:

I went back and I misunderstood the OP.
I thought we were talking about grain here. Does anyone use a cheese grater to break up grain?? If so, I've never even heard of that before.

Pf tek is easier than grains and can also be used as spawn with results as good as you would have with grains.

Me too man  started with wbs. However I did it because I was like dafuqs brf? I knew what bird seed was so I did that. Later when it was almost done I figured out it was spawn for a tub, so I spawned it to a mini mono of horse manure I found in the field. Pasteurized with the god damn stupid af pillow case tek. I have no idea how I got my first fruits and trip from it..
