When you don't eat enough calories it goes into starvation mode and eats your muscle instead of using the fat :wtfsonic:

Weight loss is all calories in calories out, I think that your metabolism does get mildly fucked if you've been on a very low calorie diet for a long time(i.e. anorexia), your metabolism might be a bit lower than it should be, but if you're in such a situation where you're basically emaciated, your TDEE is very low, most likely, so when you resume any kind of normal eating, you'll gain weight to a point - but if you're eating to fit the bmr of a person in your demographic who is of a healthy weight, obviously your weight gain should subside provided you don't go beyond the calories required.

Now...funnily enough, I had to get bloodwork done because I'm seeing a psychiatrist who wanted to rule out physiological things. I'm not overweight, and I'm 5'4 and only moderately active(I walk a lot and stuff, but I haven't consistently exercised for a while, which has to change now) but if I calculate my tdee, it's around 2000-2100 calories a day, but if I eat more than 1800, I will gain, for sure.

This confused me, but it's doable so whatevs, and then I got my labwork back, and sure as shit, I have hypothyroidism. Metabolic rate does differ from person to person, but usually it peaks around 300-ish calories, which makes sense for me(as does the sudden bout of crippling fatigue that's been plaguing me for like a year now). Not only this, but an underactive thyroid is easily treated with a pretty inexpensively, easily obtained pill. Is it fun to be tired all the time, and have to eat less than someone your height and weight should be able to consume without gaining? Not at all, and I'm sure there are people out there without access to blood tests and medical care that have to deal with it, but for the huge amount of people claiming their thyroid problem is the reason that they're 300lbs...I'm skeptical as fuck about that.

I did have a bout of disordered eating and starvation as a teenager, and at first I found the thyroid thing curious, but apparently my grandmother has a funky thyroid issue of some kind too that I never knew of, so it's probably just genetic.
