Need ID for possible edibles
    #21955982 - 07/17/15 12:42 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Came upon a log with large white mushrooms.
Northeast Wisconsin USA  Mid July

seems to be two kinds of mushrooms- both gilled

one type is shown on left of picture 1 - 7 cm across cap
thick solid stem that is relatively smooth

the other type is shown on right of image 1
larger in size (12 cm cap) thick solid fuzzy stem  It branches

no color change with either on bruising

Spore prints are on aluminum foil-for both- prints are white-

The surface of the caps on the larger type with fuzzy stem was somewhat irregular

left mushroom picture 1- details in pictures ABCD  Spore Print B, Stem cross section C
right mushroom picture 1 details in pictures 2-11  The irregular surface is shown in 2, spore print in 6, stem cross section in 8 and details of gills, stem in others

would appreciate ID on both

I wouldn't eat them because of the white print they don't look like amanitas because the stem is touching the gills but a white print is usually a sign of amanitas which are incredibly deadly. You can wait for a TI but they don't look good. However its very possible they're not amanitas and just some other species of white spored mushroom but a TI should make the call.

Not an Amanita sp.  I don't know what they are, never seen them before and don't have my books.  I would definitely NOT eat them though until some of the other TI's confirm their identify.

if they were on wood, the second appears to be Lentinus levis. The first one could be that too, and the furry stem has been rained on, or if it were on the ground Clitocybe sp.

No one has suggested elm cap  (Hypsizygus ulmarius) or veiled oyster (Pleurotus dryinus) which is along the lines of what I was thinking-

but I was quite out of my comfort range on these specimens

the gill connection is wrong for Hypsizygus, and there are no veil remnants for it to be dryinus
