Sheepshead

I know I'm going about this all wrong for an ID it's more of a simple question I was doing some yard work at my parents house last weekend and they have a stump from an old cherry tree that was cut down last year and it had what I'm about 95% sure was a sheepshead ( Grifola frondosa) growing on it. But for this area it would be out of season and from what I know they mainly grow on oak I couldn't get a pic cause I did not have a camera on me. But has anyone ever heard of them growing on Cherry wood?

Lol, I read "Sheepshead" and immediately thought, why is this guy askin for an ID on a fish here?? :-D
Now, im not great with my trees but I believe oak and cherry are both hardwoods... dunno how closely related they are but fungi are very opportunistic organisms...

If you consider the source, it's kinda pitiful

chicken of the woods and hen of the woods are typically found on oaks but are common to all hardwoods
