ID for me please I'm not 100% but I want to be; Victoria, Australia
    #21954844 - 07/17/15 05:27 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Victoria, Australia
Found them growing next to a creek nearby some trees and a bark patch. Some where in the bark and others where just in the grass.

Gills:
The gills are a solid brown but started off bit more yellow before I dried them

Stem:
Stem is long and sort of bent. Some of the bigger shrooms the stem gets fatter at the top but not obviously larger

Cap:
This is the main reason I grabbed them, all the caps where goldish with a nice spot on the Middle, just like you want. But after being left to dry for 2 days they have all gone a solid faded gold all over the cap.

Spore print colour:
Spore print was brown

Bruising:
I didn't see the bruising I just picked them an put them straight in my bag. (Found them on a popular walking track and someone was coming  )

Other information:
The caps are all about 1-2cm diameter and the stems were over an inch long

They may be a Lacaria sp

no p. cubensis in Victoria, especially in winter

they are not p. subaeruginosa

you should let your mate know not to eat mushrooms that he doesn't know what they are......just in case.

they are very nice mushrooms, but prob not very nice to eat, may not be edible .
put them in the garden.

research what p. subaeruginosa look like and go a hunting in some nice wet valleys.

i put a few in the garden already, when i picked them i dug them from the ground still in the dirt rather than from the stem and i put them in my garden, but now i know they arent the kind im looking for i'll probably throw them out when i get a chance

They mowed all the grass around the creeks not long ago and it destroyed all the really good spots i knew of, havent found anything since then :frown:

Not with a brown spore print. I'd say it is probably a Tubaria sp.

Typical Tubaria infused placebo. :smirk:

But seriously, please tell him to wait with ingestion until the mushrooms are identified properly.
He was lucky this time, but being reckless like that isn't fun anymore when your kidneys collapse.

Ah come on, sounds like a good time to me! :P

Ya seriously though, your buddy is very lucky. Listen to some lectures by Paul Stamets if you want to know just how easy it can be to mistake deadly mushrooms for magic species. Plenty of people have died from eating a small handful of Galerinas which they mistook for Psilocybe or Panaeolus. Even when you know your psilocin-bearing species inside and out, there can always be undocumented fatal species that appear under unusual weather conditions. Mushrooms are constantly evolving, sometimes so quickly that mycologists can't keep up.

Maybe next time your buddy will get sick and feel bloated from eating the wrong mushroom. Or maybe he will consume amanitoxins and not realize that he's dying until it's already too late (common with amanitoxin poisonings). Mushrooms aren't something to play around with.

That being said, Stamets also agrees that the most common active species are also some of the easiest to identify AS LONG AS YOU ARE THOROUGH in your identification process. It may take you a few years to get to the point where you can spot most active species with the naked eye, but if you take some time to study the actives, you'll find that they often have some unique features which makes their identification almost fool-proof for the experienced mushroom hunter.

But thanks for the help
