MBP Easy Bulk & Casing
    #21952361 - 07/16/15 03:02 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Casing layer :  Jiffy/Verm Very light and fluffy.  This casing has proved to me very good.  It makes for easy application, easy colonization and easy harvesting.  Minimal mushroom to substrate lost when picking, a simple twist and pull will do for most.  It also get's up to temperature in the oven very quickly in my test runs.

Stuff Inside my casing:
1qt Vermiculite
1qt Jiffy Organic Seed Starter Mix
1 tblspoon Clam Shell
1 tblspoon Gypsum
1 TeaSpoon Hydrated Lime

Sterilization is easy.  I just toss mine into a giant metal bowl, spread it around the sides and put foil over the whole bowl.  90min @ 190 in my oven will ensure that it stays the proper temperature for the time I need, oven's will vary.

Substrate additives:

All the substrates I use consist of Coir for the bulk of everything.  These are all the additives I use for my substrates.  I will not be including a picture of Coir, I think you can use your imagination.  This is very similar to my casing layer, just more extra's and no Jiffy mix.  Although I have used jiffy mix inside my substrates with great success, I don't think it is worth spending money on the extra quart it takes.

Stuff in my substrate additive:

Always 1 Brick of Coir
2 1/2qt Vermiculite
3 tblspoon Gypsum
3 tblspoon Clamshell
1/4 tblspoon Lime

I highly recommend every person to start using some verm if they have not used it or tried it yet for bulk grows.

Casing :

Preheat Oven to 190f.  This is just the temperature that works for me.  Results may vary, I suggest using a thermometer of some kind on a bowl of water to see how fast and stable it heats it to 170f.

#1 Dump your mixture into a big metal bowl, ceramic bowl or metal pot.  Pretty much any large vessel that is oven safe up to 200f just to be safe.

#2 Add 2 1/4 cups of water to your prepackaged casing.

Your results may vary because of the method used to scoop your ingredients, so make sure you are satisfied that it is field capacity before continuing onto the next step.

#3 After double checking for field capacity, I recommend the Costco GIANT foil.  It covers any large pot or bowl with ease.

Cover your vessel nicely

#4 Stick in the oven for 1h 20m.

I can't say this enough.  These are just my times that I use.  Results may vary.

*Nothing is going to get hurt by using my times, even in your own oven*

I have done several sterilized coir runs also, I could never tell the difference between my 170f and 210f grows.  This does not mean you won't encounter something though.

Substrate:

Preheat Oven to 190f.  This is just the temperature that works for me.  Results may vary, I suggest using a thermometer of some kind on a bowl of water to see how fast and stable it heats it to 170f.

1 Brick of Coir (I use eco-earth)
1 Prepackaged bag
6 cups of water

#1 Add 6 cups of hot water to a large metal pot capable of holding everything when expanded
#2 Bring to a roaring boil
#3 Add premixed bag

#4 Add Brick of coir, leave the heat on for 30 seconds, then cut the heat & add the lid

#5 Wait 4 min

#6 Get something to mix the substrate well, I use a large slotted metal spoon

You Will also notice, since I have provided a picture that the substrate starts out at close to pasteurization temperature.  Boiling the water first ensures that when you put it in the oven, it will rise and stay at the temperature you want it and for exactly how long you want it.
#7 Add foil over the pot *GIANT COSTCO FOIL*, If you use normal foil, you have to fold a seam to make it bigger, which I have done for over a year and works perfectly fine.  The Costco foil is just a time saver though.
#8 Put pot in oven for 1h 30m - 2h 10m, until it reaches the desired temperature of 170f for 1 hour.

You are going to have a test subject for every oven, once you dial it in though.. Well.. It's a pretty amazing tool for doing a quick 1-4 tub's worth of substrate in a flash.

That's it!  You have completed a nice coir substrate with good fluff and additives.  I have been using this method for every bulk grow since I started.  I did for a short period of time not use vermiculite, which I found to be a huge mistake.

I would also like to add, nothing is really unique about this other than there is not many newer bulk or casing guides that involve using an oven/pots/bowls.  Otherwise the ingredients and methods are not mine by any means, they may involve a unique take or twist, but not my ideas.

This is the bulk substrate that I pasteurized in the picture.

I figured I would just post a new one.  All my grows have been done using this method, I don't want to post old photo's.  I decided I will only post new ones on this thread.  I assure you that this does work and I have many high quality grows using it with very good results.
