Sage smoke as anti-bacterial air purifier?

I just came across this article... http://reset.me/story/smudging-burning-herbs-to-purify-air-of-harmful-bacteria-and-energies/
"The researchers analyzed the burning of wood and a mixture of medicinal herbs over a one-hour period in a closed room. A massive 94 percent reduction in airborne bacteria was detected over this short period and, as the authors detail, βthe ability of the smoke to purify and disinfect the air and to make the environment cleaner was maintained up to 24h in the closed room.β
And the paper it cites: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17913417
What do you guys think? I don't understand how it could work, but hell yea I'd burn sage for an hour once a week if it has that big of an effect.

That closed room is what, like, closet-sized, and didn't they burn like 3 pounds of material in there? Replacing the bacteria with carcinogens may or may not be beneficial.

Not sure, I haven't found the full study yet. That would be disappointing if the data is based on 3 pounds in a closet.

Eh, thought I read about someone debunking it pretty quick because of flawed methods like that but, who knows.

No shit. But SAB isn't perfect. I imagine if you did the SAB work in a small room where you had the sage burning, it would be especially effective. Doesn't sound much different than running a laminar flow hood for a half hour prior to going in and doing any work. Just 100x less expensive. That's if the study is accurate.

Yeah, the study used a space of 13 cubic foot and burned 1.5kg of material for an hour. At that volume, I wonder if it was just a matter of convection moving the air through the fire to sterilize things.
The "fewer bacteria even 30 days after treatment" thing looks impressive until you realize they used their microbiological sample and media prep space as their treatment area. That place was probably loaded to the gills with an absolutely enormous organism load before treatment, so even the "small" increase over time may have been to bring it back to ambient background levels of a normal room within no time at all.

Sweet, thanks for linking that and the details. I agree I don't see how that's any significant finding at all then. It's a shame how so many blog or journal sites misrepresent information.
